Ale for you

by the fantastic PunchingSolas

xxxxxxx“Ale for you.”

xxxxxxxThe tavern keeper’s quiet declaration penetrated the murmurous ambience of the tavern. Amidst the crackle of a hearth and the interjection of jolly laughter or heated debate, Gilly’s clawtips slid from the dented iron tankard before Ragnir. Her gaze drifted from inspecting the gnarled twists of his horns to the thick talons lifting to collect the drink, dropping coin for Gilly in the process upon the nicked wooden counter.

xxxxxxxRagnir did not thank her, nor much acknowledge her presence beyond the stoic glance washed over her before the plethora of his thoughts consumed him once more. He watched the cautious laughter of a flustered dragon, the lilting singsong torment of playful companions steeped in the comfort that platonic love afforded. The land aligned itself differently to Ragnir’s teachings. His initial judgement of dragons unknown to him gave him pause, his expression stiffened in a pinched mixture of remorse and purposeful rumination. The tavern keeper caught the sight of him, and uttered a chuckle.

xxxxxxxA ripple of laughter punctured Ragnir’s thoughts and prompted a sharp glance towards its source. A gaggle of dragons recounting a tale wrought with hearty laughter. Some wiped tears from their eyes while others fought to continue through the bubbles of restrained cackling. Dragons hailing from Sornieth’s far reaches, unhindered by the hue of eyes or notions of ‘other’. Ragnir’s body softened from its rigidity. Another swell of uproarious laughter, and Ragnir settled entirely. A strange, almost pleasant feeling anchored itself to his otherwise brooding silence. Ragnir took a sip of the ale and let its taste permeate in remnant bitterness. How strange he thought the world he inhabited, full of frivolous nothings and devoid of a lifetime guided by the ideals so instilled within Ragnir. And yet he could not hate it. He did not want to hate it, any longer.

xxxxxxxHe wanted to know more.

Ragnir hatched deep in the Fortress of Ends, in the room that had long ago been assigned such a purpose. Gaolers were practical, after all, and any who bred would take their eggs to the specified room and leave them in the care of a hatchery attendant. It would generally be a Gaoler too old or injured to assist with the prisoners, giving them a way to be useful. No Gaoler wanted to be seen as useless, such was a cardinal sin among their race. The hatchery attendants generally were responsible for the early education of the Gaolers as well, and separating the Gaolers into the order that they were best suited for.

He had been pleased when he was assigned to the Seekers, putting his talents to good use in seeking out any Shade creatures who dared to venture near their lands. Generally the Seekers stayed away from the prisons, bringing their prisoners in and then leaving them in the care of the Sentries and Keepers. The dedication to maintaining their prisons was in their blood, they were better able to ignore the cries of the prisoners begging to be let free better than any others. Ragnir was considered soft-hearted, and so was expected to stay away from the cells at all costs.

Of course, ‘soft-hearted’ to a Gaoler didn’t mean that he was less strict. When they rejoined the world, Ragnir did make an effort, but it was difficult. He found it easier to be around Ice dragons, whether they were Gaolers or not. The Shade taint was more easily overlooked, as any blessed by the Icewarden could never be a creature of the Shade. He goes to a pub daily, trying different drinks and trying to blend in with the other dragons. By day he would still go out and seek out criminals, of course, and in the evenings he would go out and have a drink in the pub, watching how the other dragons interacted with each other. It was hard, trying to unlearn everything that had been facts of life until that point, but he kept persevering. Maybe Ragnir was ‘soft-hearted’, but he was slowly learning that it wasn’t a bad thing.

Notable Mentions

Favourite Ancient Dragon, by FreyaShadow

love this boy! The viking warrior look is just perfect! <3 He looks like a Jarl or a powerful warrior chieftain :3

Most intimidating berg, by Alixe

Armed literally to the teeth, Ragnir still looks drop dead gorgeous - and like he could make me drop dead if I tried his patience too much. The dark gnarlhorns are pretty eyecatching on his otherwise light color combo and match the weapons of his accent very well. It was difficult choosing between him and his companion Brejdalir, who is just as pretty and pretty deadly looking. 10/10, would not mess with.

Most FIGHT ME dragon, by FluffyPacifist

If you looked at him disrespectfully he would tell you to come outside and duel him. His familiar also looks so serious too! Love it.
