What is he thinking? What does he dream about? Does he have feelings? These are the questions that orbit Orion, the mysterious Spiral tasked with granting the loyalty’s wishes. He tends to slip into rooms unnoticed, listening and observing everything before him. It is said that he knows every secret in the kingdom– even those of the commoners. He is strange, mystical, and omnipresent; a source of many rumors and speculations. Not much is known about who he really is, where he came from, or how he earned the loyalty’s favor. From what most subjects can tell, he hangs around Hikari and Azraq most of the time. He seems to enjoy granting Hikari’s wishes. Azraq, on the other hand, doesn’t have many wishes at all. He seems to have all that he needs, so Orion uses his presence as a kind of ‘day off.’ They exchange notes on magic, or practice experimental spells together. They stay out of each other’s business, which makes each good company for the other, since they are both dragons with many secrets.
Most folks, even the loyals themselves, view Orion’s position as symbolic. This could not be farther from the truth. He does indeed have real magical powers that allow him to grant wishes. However, he is quite picky about which wishes he chooses to fulfill and when. Even the most powerful and wealthy dragons cannot predict whether or not he will give them what they desire. He is not a genie in a lamp, but is instead a fickle and persnickety creature. If another dragon slights him or upsets him in any way, he will ignore their wish. Furthermore, wishes give him power. The more he collects, the more magic he possesses. If he grants the wish, a small piece of his power goes away. He would be foolish to transform all the petty wants of the loyalty into reality. It would be sheer chaos. The amount of murder requests he receives each day… they should just hire assassins already! Thus, he has allowed word of his abilities to fade into mere rumor. He likes it better this way. It allows him to be left in peace.
There is one wish Orion refuses to ever fill. Interestingly enough, it comes from Hikari. She wishes deep in her heart to run away with a dragon named Zack and have a long, beautiful life outside the palace walls. The wish-granter knows that if he allows his magic to manifest such a destiny for the princess, her father will have his head. Self-preservation is another key motivator for this magical Spiral. Thus, he refuses to give into Hikari’s deepest desire. His primary motivation is to stay on the loyalty’s good side and benefit from a luxurious life in the palace. At his core, he’s not the most ambitious of dragons. This is another reason for the backup in wish-granting. If only Hikari knew that the answer to her deepest wants lurks within the very confines of her glamorous prison… Then what would Orion do? He’d have to refuse her outright! He can’t have that. So instead, he keeps his talents a secret. The loyalty would never leave him alone if they knew the truth.
Orion wonders sometimes if his gift is a curse. He is a dragon destined to cater to the whims of others, unable to use the same magic for his own needs. He has long since come to terms with the way his powers work. Still, it’d be nice if every time he wanted a cup of tea, one would appear. Sometimes, just for the fun of it, he grants wishes using material methods instead of his magic. For example, if a young loyal wants a specific type of toy, he will secretly purchase it from the marketplace and leave it by their bedside. He thinks it’s funny to use rudimentary means for a problem he could solve with a powerful spell. He isn’t as heartless as one might initially believe. Despite exhibiting very few emotions, Orion does have a conscience. The more he exercises his abilities, the more empathy he develops. This is the other half of his ‘curse.’ As he learns how to bless others, he gradually becomes kinder. He wonders if someday he’ll give up his powers and status entirely, when there are no more wishes left to grant. Until then, he remains in the court, keeping hold of every dragon’s most treasured desires.
