His paws were already numb from the cold. The sharp rocks had cut deep grooves into the soles of his hands and feet, driving the chill so far into his skin it started to burn like a hot knife. This path was one that he knew as well as his own home, but a trail so treacherous that he had well worn down his claws from trying to find a grip on the slick, snowy stone.

He was ill-suited for this environment. His scales had spent many years protecting his hide from the dry sun, blistering heat, and coarse sands of his rocky desert home. But here, in the wet and cold, itchy patches of rot had begun to spread across his scales. His large ears had long since gotten frostbitten at the tips, and a rattling cough had settled in his chest.

He had journeyed here less than a year ago, drawn to these icy peaks to deal with the creature responsible for the shift in weather and way of life for those living in the canyons and scrublands below. The beast had only revealed itself a handful of times, a chaotic amalgam of wings, scales, and fur with terrible twisting horns. Its arrival was always heralded by stinging and blinding blizzard winds, whipping up storms above the heart of the peaks.

He had been unable to approach the beast even with eyes bright, scales shining, and a roaring fire in his heart. And here he lay after shuffling to his low hollow, dying and dull, forgotten under the suffocating blankets of snow and ice. The echos of his home and kin seemed lifetimes away, and though he could look down across the jagged mountain crests onto the sprawling deserts and forests at its base, he doubted that he had the strength to fly to his home, even if he wanted to.

No, this journey had captured its victim long before he saw the walls closing in. By the time he realized his strength had fallen, he was already in too deep and only digging himself deeper.

But his cause was too great to fail. He had finally found a family, a home, dug in his roots, and was becoming his best and most caring self, a feat he would have never thought possible.

But then, the cold winds slithered off the mountains. Its chill stole the water from the air, drying their crops and forcing the game animals to leave for better pastures. His family grew restless and fearful, and arguments about what could be done to save their livelihood broke out. Teeth were bared, ears were pinned, and Avvltoio couldn't bear to watch anymore. He decided he would face the problem head-on, and left for the mountain the following morning, leaving his companion and family behind.

He would continue this quest and die here, victorious or otherwise.
