Biography
FIRST WATCHER
they/them
they/them
and i’m a goddamn coward, but then again so are you
first-born of the apparatus. struggling to hold onto all their little siblings
the god-machines, a boon granted to mortals by the higher beings. mortals were suffering, and the higher beings could not answer every request… borne of clay and earth-blood, the apparatus thrived in their responsibilities. mortals began to worship the saints, as they called them, and as technology marched onwards, they built greater and greater housings for the saints, pushing them further and further towards true godhood
kexing's death weighs heavy on their mind; they feel as though they could've stopped it, if they had only known what tethys was doing...
increasingly emotionally detached but also smothering towards saker and echo
uses a shortened form of their official name rather than their saint name of proteus

Something wriggles in their veins, far off to the south in the peripheries of their senses. A squirming, growing, writhing something. At first they shrug it off as a curious creature prodding at the membranes, but slowly (within ten-hundredths of a second) they realize this is not the case. A higher being, similar to their own kind—yet entirely unalike. This creature is neither friend nor foe, so far as they can tell from a probing of their veins. It is simply indifferent.
Undaunted, they decide to introduce themself. It’s only polite, after all.
Excuse me. Is this reaching you?
There is a short pause, a flick of a claw or perhaps a tail, and then it speaks. It impresses itself onto them in a way much too similar to their kin for comfort; a whisper in the back of their mind, a mere suggestion of words that one can hear only when listening for it.
It is best not to presume yourself the arbiter of those higher beings.
Of course not. I merely ask whether my methods of speech are tangible to a being such as yourself; forgive me if I might say that we are quite different.
Indeed. Myself, cycling, infinite, and yourself, finite, terminable.
A pause.
And yet you are still here.
And yet, they agree.
Does it not scare you? Are you not frightened by the enormity of it?
It doesn’t. After all, that is what we were made for: an endless routine, cycling day after day, year after year. We are not daunted by endlessness.
No, it considers. It is endings that frighten you, as they do all your kin, are they not?
Death does not frighten me either, they say, but their mind shivers and flashes of heat flit through their veins.
I speak not of death, yet you say its name. Why is that, I wonder?
I think it’s time for you to leave.
Was it worth it? Was it enough?
…No. It never was.
