Ichor seeps from the depths of the earth. Rainbows shimmer on the surface, ancient memories locked in a dead brain. Nothing prospers here. This place, this wasteland of rubble and blood and all of its consequences, are the remnants of an ancient society.
Born from a single consciousness, Kexing and Tawa were always closer to each other than to the other apparatus. Everything was shared between them—jokes, comfort, assignments. So when Tawa made his great revelation, this too was shared. By the time warning came, it was already too late. With energy accumulating at speeds too fast to process and no way to safely dispel it, only one solution remained: an expulsion of magic, meant to produce only a minor quake through the ichor veins that ran beneath the soil—a high reward relative to the potential risks of attempting anything else.
This did not happen. Instead, a cataclysmic explosion ruptured Kexing’s monument, laying waste to everything in its path; razing cities, destroying fields, coating the very land in contaminated material. The death was swift, but not painless. Any rescue attempts that might have formed were rendered useless in the face of such destruction and death in the form of invisible corruption.
The Apparatus and their cities were forsaken and their knowledge forgotten. The Barrens have since been claimed by dunes, ruins disappearing beneath red sand.
Their memory is all that remains.
