The Hunter

|
His parents were an odd match. His father was a Fire dragon, with boiling blood through and through. His mother was an Ice dragon who preferred the dark and cold places of the world. Vesuv didn't have time to get to know his mother. She left when he was young, searching for a place where she would be more comfortable. That left Vesuv with his father, a professional hunter. Training had lasted for months. As Vesuv came to understand it, until he could track something with his eyes closed and his nose covered, he wasn't good enough for anyone, especially not his father. The training had hardened Vesuv's emotions. The constant screeching from his father had made Vesuv numb to criticism. He understood what he did wrong as soon as he made the first move, but he took the criticism without fighting back. He had come to believe that his mother would return if he was stronger, faster, and better. Hunting was the only thing his family line was known for and he wanted his mother to be proud of him and to see that he followed in the footsteps of his ancestors. Little did he know she cared nothing about hunting, despite being a wildclaw. But the hope remained in his heart as he practiced. Slowly, as if a snail was crawling uphill, Vesuv surpassed his father. He was a better hunter, a better tracker, and a more humble dragon. Years of abuse had lead Vesuv to make a promise to himself. He would never become like his father. The numbness Vesuv felt inside of him was due to constant rage and anger and no compassion. He didn't want anyone else to feel the way he did. To suffer the way he was. Others deserved better. So, with the resolve in his heart, Vesuv left home and left his father. A horrible past was placed behind him, leading to a bright future. Sadly, finding a new place to live was harder than Vesuv thought. He was not worried about surviving. He hunted and foraged for himself, finding plenty to eat within the wilderness. He found shelter and fresh water without so much as breaking a sweat. He realized he could live a comfortable life alone in the wilderness, fending for himself. He could provide himself with everything he required to live. There was no need for companionship or a clan. Such things would only be a distraction to him. Vesuv knew he could easily live alone. That was, until he was discovered. During a usual hunt to gather food for himself, he ran into two mirrors doing the same thing. They needed a bigger haul to take back to their clan, and Vesuv took their kill. There was no fight between them. Blood wasn't spilled. Vesuv gave up his kill and went after something else he had sensed in the wild. The mirrors vanished after that, and he was sure he would never see them again. He was mistaken. They returned, with more dragons behind them. Vesuv was ready to fight to defend his cave and his territory, but that was when he was offered something surprising. A clan. A job. He had accidentally taken up refuge in the clan's grounds, so he wouldn't have to move away. All he had to do was hunt for them, provide them with food and track down a target or two. His sense of smell was something to behold. The mirrors had noticed it when they first encountered him. Vesuv, seeing the possibilities behind such an offer, agreed. Krysalis, the beautiful mirror, and Miasmis, the hardened killer, were Vesuv's partners. Both of the women were terrifyingly good hunters. He enjoyed hunting with them. They never berated him or criticized him. They offered no praise other than the custom “good job” when someone caught something. Their company was enjoyable. Something Vesuv looked forward to. When they arrived at his cave, ready to go out on a hunt, he has to admit he feels overjoyed at the company. Hunting with others that treat him as an equal is enjoyable. It is something he admires in them. Hunting alone is just as good, but there is something special about hunting with those that are so passionate about the art. When it comes to tracking down escaped criminals or those the clan wishes to destroy, Vesuv only gets more excited. Tracking intelligent prey with the two mirrors makes life just that much sweeter. Vesuv admits that he is happy with the clan when he's hunting for them or tracking down criminals. Otherwise, it is like he is living alone, like he wanted. Life couldn't look much better. Yet, he can't help but wonder about his father and how the old dragon is faring. Vesuv doesn't feel concern. Just curiosity. He wonders if the Flamecaller gave the old dragon what he deserved... and Vesuv wonders if his mother thinks about him to this day. by Dew |
