It's a strange sight to behold a creature born of the distant Ice region roaming the burning heat of the Ashfall Waste, but Mammon has chosen to make it his home. After all, there is molten fire that hides beneath the surface of the Southern Icefield too, volcanoes erupting in an earth-shattering cataclysm of fire and ice, and that same molten fury runs through him. Hot and cold by turns, he is vicious and unpredictable. Something more fearsome than the blood of ordinary dragons runs in his veins. His father was a wendigo, a monstrous ice elemental known for devouring his victims down to the bone. His mother is unknown, but he has a faint memory of an armored warrior, who tarried briefly on her way to a distant battleground. Of the two, he favors his sire, both in appearance and temperament. Though he is only a half-breed, Mammon's wendigo blood shows through in the gnarled twists of his horns, the dark hollows under his eyes, and his gaunt form. His claws and teeth are less noticeable, at least until it's too late, but a careful observer might notice that they are unusually long and sharp before Mammon brings them out. The clan is careful not to leave him alone around prisoners, or they might come back to discover he's taken a piece out of him. However, he is very useful for intimidation, since prisoners who recognize the monstrous gleam in his eye are eager to talk as long as they're not left alone with him. His den within the lair is kept dark and foreboding, chilled with his magic far below the temperature most Fire dragons are comfortable entering. Very few dare to venture into it, in case they don't leave again. Mammon is a fierce fighter, and a merciless one. All those weaker than him are prey, to be defeated, driven off, or devoured. If his opponent is one he can't slay, he still takes a vicious pleasure in leaving the marks of their battle on them: a missing eye, a brutal scar, a ragged wing. His own hide is crossed with scars, and he bears the ones from warriors he respects with pride, boasting of the fight he received it in, and the one who gave it to him. He respects only those who can hold their own against him, and gives his allegiance only to those who can defeat him in a fight. He came seeking the unnamed clan when he heard rumors of secret assassins and accomplished warriors, ones who wielded power in the Ashfall Waste that was both subtle and deadly. Although he underestimated Jeanne because of her kindness when they first met, she quickly showed him the strength that lay hidden under her gentleness as soon as he made the mistake of attacking one of her clan members. When she defeated him, he swore loyalty to her, which she reluctantly accepted on the condition that he not harm any more of the clan. Despite his oath, Mammon take a fairly loose view of what harm to another clanmate consists of. As long as it doesn't leave any permanent marks or impairment, he considers it fair game. Although he mostly stays away from those clanmembers who are not fighters, knowing that it would never be tolerated if he attacked them, the clan's warriors often find themselves challenged. He will attempt to goad them into a fight if necessary, calling them weak and fearful when they refuse. The only way to make him stop is to ignore him, since those who have given in to the temptation to teach him a lesson quickly realized that it only made him redouble his efforts, wanting to fight them again and again until he won. Some, like Hel, who enjoy a fight as much as he does, get along better with him, enjoying their battles and giving as good as they get. Although he has a cruel streak, and a vicious one, he doesn't hold a grudge once a fight is over no matter how heated it got. Having him on their side in a fight is better than the alternative, and he's useful enough to the clan that none of them bring it up when, after they carry out an assassination, the body is nowhere to be found and Mammon has bloodstained jaws. ~by Mirrorstone |
