Biography
Bell: The Thief
Everyone has their faultlines, their willful blindness, their personal worldview. What I'm good at is seeing those, and manipulating them.

For all that Light flight may say they value truth and objectivity, their native breed values aristocracy and wealth, in both gold and information, just as much. As a scrawny young skydancer from a poor and humble clan, Bell found herself continually shut out of rare manuscript viewings, scholarly conferences, galas, and fetes. She could look upon the pristine white marble, but never set foot in it, and she seethed. How could they say that knowledge was always free and open to all when they took steps to ensure that the best of it remained within their own circles? More than anything, she wanted the luxury and prestige she was barred from. Bell began finding her own ways to take what she felt she was entitled to. A skydancer's small, slim frame and clever fingers made her adept at slipping into places and picking locks. She soon realized that once she was inside a place, most dragons there would assume she belonged as long as she looked and acted like she did. Whenever she was caught, she merely took it as a lesson in what not to do next time. During one such instance, cooling her heels in a cell for thievery, she met Adder. The imperial was a warrior for hire from Plague, who'd been bought into an interclan dispute and come off on the wrong side of their warriors. (It was no coincidence that they were there at the same time, as Bell had hoped to take advantage of the clan's distraction to help herself to their valuables.) It wasn't long before the two recognized the advantage of an alliance, and with Bell's clever planning and Adder's brute strength, they accomplished a jailbreak and the beginning of a very rewarding partnership. When they came upon Viper, abysmal with machinery but with all the ingenuity and innovation a Lightning dragon could ask for, and rounded their little group up to three, Bell realized that their combination of talents could be used for more than just breaking and entering, and set out to expand their repertoire. The three of them worked as a group of incredibly successful con artists, with Bell to figure out the right angle to make people believe what they wanted them to, Viper to figure out the mechanics that made the plan work, and Adder as the muscle when it was needed or when something went south. They would work out whatever scheme was necessary to get themselves into a clan's lair, from chasing away the vicious imperial that appeared and started attacking their clan members, to just happening to have a lightning dragon who could fix something they'd sabotaged previously, to posing as an ambassador and her bodyguards from an illustrious light clan. And dainty, harmless looking Bell, with her scholar's mind, and her innocent questions, could get herself the run of the lair to pocket valuables, pick up blackmail information, and memorize the layout, guards, entry and exit points, and any other information that some other clan might pay for. Between her thieving abilities, and her skill at manipulation, they got along quite well. Of course, not every plan can go right, and it was in the aftermath of such a failure, exhausted and injured, that they stumbled upon Clan Lodestar. Bell attempted to spin them a story, but was welcomed inside before she could even finish it. For the first time, she found herself in a place that didn't ask her to justify that she was worthy of being there, and that gave before she could take, or even ask. Far from her assumptions that they were pushovers or easy marks, they clearly had the force and ability to defend themselves and what was theirs, but chose to welcome and give to those who needed it. Her group found themselves lingering there even when they could easily have moved on. Bell, despite seeming a most unconventional light dragon, nonetheless dreams of one day founding her own library of rare and exotic manuscripts, and settling down to spend her days charging visiting scholars for entry, burying herself in tomes, and relaxing with her two mates. She's been stealing, trading for, and buying as many as she can get her paws on throughout their travels, storing them away in safe locations. Lately, she's been starting to wonder if perhaps Clan Lodestar is the place she's been looking for. However, none of the trio is ready to give up their old way of life just yet, and while Lodestar still serves as their base, the group often leaves for months at a time to practice their tricks in other territories. |
What, you expected a light dragon never to lie? Here's a truth for you then: Everyone will believe what they want to, regardless of the truth. The trick is make them believe the truth is what you want it to be.
