Biography
Skriker
Hello prrr-itty. Thing. Well come.
Hello prrr-itty. Thing. Well come.
|
At first glance, Skriker looks mostly like a normal dragon, but there's something a little... off about them. A little spikier than most guardians, perhaps, smaller and leaner, too long-limbed, just slightly out of proportion. When they move, they slink like a lizard instead of striding along like a normal dragon. They never seem to fly, but have the uncanny ability to scale anything, even sheer wall. And their eyes, rather than bearing the violet iris of the shadow dragon they resemble, are a solid, inky amethyst, similar enough to pass at a casual glance, but disconcerting up close. And teeth. The teeth are very... there's a lot. Are guardians supposed to have that many? Skriker was born from a dun-colored, leathery egg that blended in with the material of the nest it was snuck into so well as to be invisible. None of the dragons in the clan quite remember raising Skriker. “A very independent hatchling,” they might murmur after a moment of puzzling. “Never needed much taking care of. Always hungry, but ate everything. Grew up... rather fast? I can't remember who gave, um, her? Who gave her that odd name. Is it a nickname?” Skriker doesn't speak common draconic very well, but they often mutter to themself in an odd, fluting, almost musical tongue that they seem to have been born with an instinctive knowledge of. They also have an incredibly unmusical, nails on a chalkboard screech when they're angry or startled. If they spoke draconic better, they'd be able to tell others that their name means "the scent of warm rain falling on dusty stone" with contextual modifiers that also indicate "solitary" "hunter by ambush" and "walks at dusk," but they don't. Skriker lives in a den dug on the outskirts of the clan's territory, only occasionally coming into the lair proper when it's either near empty, or crowded enough that they won't be noticed, to help themself to the food supplies. Their coloration makes them hard to spot unless they're standing against something contrasting, and even then they can curl up and go absolutely still, and resemble nothing so much as a heap of stones. Most of the dragons in the lair are under the impression that they're some sort of border guard, and excuse Skriker's feral mannerisms, rough speech, and constant curious nibbling at everything and everyone on that basis. They're... not wrong. For something that started life as a brood parasite, Skriker is oddly keen on driving interlopers out of what they consider their territory. Or perhaps they just consider it a convenience when their next meal comes right to them instead of having to be hunted down. Skriker enjoys collecting magical or pretty objects, referring to both as "shinies" without any particular distinction. Their lair contains a clutter of skulls, crystals, fool's gold, real gold, tarnished objects that were probably some dragon's burial goods, and old, mostly burnt out, magic artifacts. Sometimes they take things from their clan's lair, but they usually prefer to find them, digging them up from the ice or picking up what the waves wash onto the Southern Icefield's pebbled beaches. They're mostly crepuscular by preference, although they can adapt their sleeping habits to be awake whenever they need to be, and it's common to see them wandering down the beach or poking in the sides of a glacier in the dim twilight. Or at least it would be if they weren't so hard to spot. They don't really understand gender as it pertains to dragons, since their species has no distinct biological sexes (the better to ensure that in the rare event two meet, they'll be able to reproduce.) They seem to consider names the equivalent to pronouns. They also seem to consider themself a dragon, insofar as the topic has ever come up. No one's ever really asked, and Skriker isn't particularly prone to introspection or examination of their identity. Skriker has two moods: curious, and hungry. Curious is friendly enough, although they have a habit of pinning down anything they want a closer look at, with a terrifyingly unexpected strength for something that looks so lean and scrawny, and disregarding all protests until they've had a thorough examination of it. Examination usually involves much nibbling, sniffing, and curious pawing. When they're hungry, it's best to just stay away. |
