Mahogany was never pretty. He’d been called many things as a hatchling- dull, lackluster, and drab were all particularly common descriptors. Sickly, often. A bad omen, occasionally. But never pretty. Words like that were reserved for other Coatls, he soon learned. The ones who scoffed when he came near. With bright, flashy colors and feathers that gleamed when they caught the moonlight. Not like him, with his coat of somber and subdued browns.

The constant scorn left him spiteful, and he dug his heels into a performative sort of vanity. He compensated for his colors any way he could in apparel and attitude alike. Attitude was the easy part. If no one was going to give him the time of day, he’d just have to make them- attention was attention, good or bad. Mahogany learned to posture, wrapping himself in protective layers of pride and narcissism. Suddenly, he was the one scoffing.

The physical aspect proved to be more difficult, however. Mahogany came from a poor family, and what little money they had went towards essentials like food and drink, not frivolities like clothing. But they were essential for Mahogany’s plans. He wanted to be envied, not despised- and what a more fitting way than through appearance? Mahogany innovated. He tore what clothes he had to shreds and stayed up into the early hours, sewing them to nothing short of perfection. It had the desired effect, and soon, all his nights were spent the same way. The rigorous work left him with a deep well of talent that’s lasted him all his life- just like his fears.
