Born at midnight under a shining harvest moon, Pumpkin was named for the token fruit of the season as her mother trilled: "Didn't y'all know it's Pumpkin Day???"

No one but Poinsettia had ever heard of that, of course, but it didn't matter. The name stuck.

As she grew older, Pumpkin began to feel the constraints of her upbringing. She couldn't act, like Poinsettia or her older brother Fennel. She wasn't good at anything artistic, like her much calmer father. She grew up, by all accounts, mediocre, feeling increasingly restless and... useless.

She hated feeling useless.

In retrospect, the seeds were probably planted when Fennel decided to dramatically flounce off to Dragonhome, something Pumpkin distantly remembers. She wanted to amount to something too, she thought to herself as she watched her brother trail into the sky like a ribbon. Someday, it would be her causing their mother to weep proudly.

 		Upon settling down in the Shrieking Wilds, Pumpkin decided Witchhazel was her teacher - without ever consulting her.

To the imperial's frustration, this doesn't change no matter how much - or how loudly - she tells her to go away.
