Having once been a nomadic hunter/gatherer, Merigold is well respected both among the clan members he represents in the Gatherers, and with his many friends. Having come to the clan after several chance meetings with Theodore throughout the Starfall Isles, Merigold eventually accepted an invitation to join after seeing the state of disarray Theodore and Astra were attempting to keep a handle on. Settling down was worthwhile to help a good friend, and soon after adopting Merigold's suggestion to split the clan into smaller, more manageable groups, Merigold was made representative for the Gatherers in the newly stable clan. Likely the most well-known and well-connected dragon in the clan, Merigold's circle of friends is far beyond just Theodore and Astra. Having befriended all of the gathering dragons, and some of the defenders, Merigold's best friend is surprisingly, not Theodore. Instead, Merigold counts his trusty dog, Orion, as his best friend and constant companion.

Travel is a beautiful thing, but after some time, it can get lonely. Merigold had spent a long time living like a nomad, never spending more than a few days in any given place. He would make friends, say his goodbyes, and repeat everything again at his new destination. Thanks to his sweet disposition and friendly nature, Merigold had accumulated more friends than he could count. On occasions, he would return to his previous destination, and was greeted with great cheer but… Merigold felt lonely. He longed for some long-term company.
While traveling through a highly concurred city, Merigold spotted a sweet little Sussex Spaniel puppy. Unable to resist small fluffy animals, he stopped to pet the dog. Merigold ended up spending the better part of the afternoon hanging out with it, giving it belly rubs and singing to it (Merigold has tried many instruments without success throughout his life, but has always been a great singer!).
“It’s late, buddy! You should go back to your owner, I bet they miss you.”
Merigold got up to leave, and he noticed how the dog did the same.
“Pupper, you know I’d love to stay and hang out, but you need to head on home!”
He started to walk away, and the dog followed him. It was starting to get dark, and the dog wouldn’t stop following him. Merigold knew he couldn’t leave the city with the puppy on his trail like this, it would never find its way back. He decided to spend one more night in the city, in hopes that the dog would try to return home the following day when it was hungry. No dice. The following morning ticked by, and the small dog sat by his side staring adoringly at him. The whole day passed, as did another night, and Merigold found himself forced to hunt something to feed to the poor animal, who was clearly hungry but wouldn’t leave his side.
By day three, Merigold came to the conclusion that nobody was missing this dog. He realised how much he had enjoyed its company, and decided to allow the dog to join him in his travels for as long as it wanted. He named the little guy Orion. Although traveling with his new companion was so much fun, Merigold ran into many situations where he felt that Orion’s well-being was compromised. Merigold could take good care of himself, but having such a vulnerable creature by his side changed the situation. Uncomfortable with this thought, the old guardian decided that it was time to settle.
Merigold got in touch with an old acquaintance of his, another guardian by the name of Theodore whom he had met several times over the course of his travels. Theodore was one of those dragons that really left a mark in Merigold’s heart, and he thought that if he was to spend more time with any of the friends he had made in his life, Theodore was at the top of the list. It seemed that the feeling was mutual, as Theodore was quick to invite Merigold to join his clan as soon as he even mentioned the idea of settling down.
This was not only great for Orion, who was now safe, but for Merigold too. He became the clan’s hunter, using his bow, arrow, and sneaking skills to bring home game to feed his companions. In times of difficulty, he also participates in defense duty, but he much prefers ranged battle to close combat. In fact, he doesn’t prefer combat at all, but his love for the clan motivates him to do it when he is needed. Having a purpose and living in a home full of friends was exactly what he had been longing for, and now he could finally enjoy that.
