TREE
naturemid.png
The Guardian of the Forest
naturebottom.png
naturev1.png
You are walking through an old-growth forest. The trees are bigger than any you've ever seen, their gnarled branches and trunks decorated with vines and covered in moss and lichen. Some are living, some are dead. The weak winter sunlight filters in through the high branches, and the forest floor is uneven, covered in deadfall, ferns and mosses, with occasional patches of pure white snow.

It is perfectly silent apart from the occasional birdcall or chattering of squirrels and chipmunks. Sometimes, a breeze stirs the branches overhead, and it almost seems as if the trees themselves are whispering in their creaky, wooden voices. It is peaceful here, and in the hush that seems to fall over the cathedral of trees, there is a certain sense of something sacred and otherworldly.

There is movement in the undergrowth, and the stench of animal musk. Something large is foraging amongst the bushes, searching for berries or mushrooms or equal fare. It moves into view, and you see that it's a black bear.

Upon sensing your presence, the bear pauses in its search for a snack and raises up onto its hindlegs, peering nearsightedly in your direction and sniffing the air. You freeze in your tracks and stare at the bear, your heart pounding. Will it lose interest and move on, or will it be aggressive? The bear stares back, possibly wondering the same thing about you.

Before either of you have a chance to respond, something else moves in the peripheral of your vision. A tree - but it isn't a tree at all. Trees do not walk. Trees do not have faces. The tree moves calmly and quietly toward the bear, which showns no sign of alarm at this strange apparition. The tree speaks softly to the large animal, and the bear seems to understand. It lowers back onto all fours, and turning, lumbers back into the undergrowth. The threat has passed... or has it?

The tree-that-isn't-a-tree turns and looks directly at you, its eyes meeting yours. They are the eyes of the forest itself, gentle and wild, old and young. The strange figure takes a step in your direction, and the movement startles you badly enough that you stumble and fall into a patch of snow. The cold is a shock to the system, but you barely notice it, as you cannot take your eyes off of the walking tree.

It is moving closer, and its body language is almost hesitant, as if it recognizes your fear and does not wish to frighten you away. It reaches toward you in invitation, and its features shift into a soft, almost tender gaze. You see that what you had mistaken for branches sprouted from its head were actually antlers.

"Do not be afraid," it says in a deep, rough voice. "I mean you no harm."

You allow it to help you to your feet. It's strength is prodigous, though it slender in build. You stare at it warily, though you're not feeling as frightened as you had been.

"What are you?" you blurt out. "Who are you?"

The tree smiles. "I am the guardian of this forest. This has been my kingdom from the beginning of time. It is not often that your kind ventures this far into the woods."

"I-I'm sorry," you stammer hastily, afraid that you have caused some kind of offense. "I am lost. If you wish for me to leave, just point the way, and I will go."

"It is far too late for that," he tells you, for you're sure it is a 'he'. His words sound menacing, but his tone remains calm and even. "You would not make it out before sundown. As it is, you will have to come with me."

"But who are you?" you repeat in bewilderment. "What is your name?"

"My name cannot be said," he replies, "but you may call me whatever you wish. I have gone by many names over the years."

You consider this for a moment, studying his unusual features. "Then I am going to call you 'Tree'."

The antlered figure throws back his head in a laugh that surprises you. "A good name, and fitting, too! Tree it is. And what might your name be, little sapling?"

"[Your Name]," you reply, a little taken aback by his unexpected response to the rather silly nickname. It would appear that this forest guardian possesses a sense of humour.

"Well then, [Your Name], follow me," Tree says, smiling warmly at you. "There is much to be done, after all. I will show you my world and my work. Are you frightened, little one?"

His question catches you off guard, and you realize that the fear you had been feeling initially had faded, and been replaced with a sense of awe and wonderment. You shake your head, a smile creeping onto your own face.

"Good, then try to keep up." With that, Tree turns and begins to walk. You follow, and are soon heading deeper into the forest than ever before.

The things that you will see and hear from this point onward are too amazing to be put into words, but they will change your life, forever.
