A whistle is heard a moment before a hatchling comes hurtling out of the sky, missing several sharp, rocky outcrops by mere inches before its descent slows. A tiny parachute opens and the small Guardian floats down into the safety net, which she promptly tries to wriggle out of and becomes stuck in. Attached to her leg with a well-made ribbon is a small glowing device, broadcasting a series of numbers. A note is pinned to the ribbon that reads "Please send back results of test flight."

Arseni wonders whether sending back this device with a concernedly-worded letter about safety features and hatchling life expectancy rates would do much good.

Maris came from the Shrieking Wilds during a time where there had been talk around the Glade of potentially moving the lair to a new location. This had not been a determining factor in the decision to transport her to Haven. After all, there had been no reason to worry back then. She had simply been sent to the Zephyr Steppes to be entrusted into the care of one of her grandmothers, where the waters were calm and she could explore them at her own pace. Her mother had been very sure of this and perhaps her grandma Murky had cosigned the idea knowing it would make grandma Sveta happy. Regardless, that is how things turned out.

When Mazu and Lama joined the clan as hatchlings, dropped off by Mazu's father, Lama was adopted into the family very quickly. Because of this, Lama began to call Maris her sister and it stuck.

Ever since Maris can remember, she has felt an affinity for the sea and a desire to explore it. She cares very much about the study and preservation of marine life, and makes that her goal wherever she goes. Eventually, she would like to launch a campaign to protect certain rare marine life. Perhaps one day she might even discover new life in the depths of Sornieth's seas!

Unfortunately, during her expeditions, she would come across crevices which were too small for a dragon of her size to properly explore and she couldn't help wondering if she was missing out on something special hidden just outside of her reach. Clearly, she needed some help... if only there was someone smaller who shared a common interest with her... As it turned out, Haven had one such dragon and her name was Choi. Maris had noticed the Fae dressed like a fluffy deep sea fish diving on her own from time to time. Choi was known to be rather nervous and flighty, so approaching her was tough, but Maris learned soon enough that the nervousness could be assuaged by the promise of protection. And once Choi was more or less at ease, she warmed up quite marvelously.

The two worked together in companionable silence most of the time, which suited them just fine. It was a calming experience to not feel pressured to force conversation just to fill the time because both of them knew that, if they should have something to say, it would be received with the same amount of enthusiasm and interest.

But pleasant, long, and simple days of silence on the open water all changed the day Sabori approached with the idea of becoming a pirate under her command - read: jumped on Maris' back and attempted to claim her as her ship.

Maris was at first bemused by the apparent fact that Sabori did not actually seem to know what a pirate actually was. Oh, she had a vague concept of wild thievery and adventure alright, but she was entirely oblivious to the other aspects of the trade. Sabori didn't exactly give her very much time to consider her "offer" as it became clear that Mazu, Lama, and Choi had already been roped into the scheme. But given that Maris personally knew the ragtag assortment of Faes who had been brought to her for boarding, Maris understood that they were all here for their own reasons and it would be beneficial to herself as well to go along with them.

Of course, it only helped strengthen her resolve when it clicked that this was her calling. Perhaps she hadn't always been meant to be a "pirate ship" per se, but maybe her affinity for the sea had led her to this moment where she would realize that her Charge was her crew. Particularly as more Fae "pirates" boarded over time. She would keep them safe no matter the cost.

As it is, the pirates are fine with Sabori calling them "pirates" and with other people thinking they are even if the name isn't entirely accurate to what they actually do. But the truth of the matter is that they were already doing their own thing with the ocean before Sabori saw them and declared, "Hey, I've got an idea... Let's band together and GO ON ADVENTURES!" So, even though Sabori's plan was to loot and go off the rails the way she thinks is appropriate of a seafaring pirate, the rest of them have viewed it as an opportunity to more easily do what they already wanted to do - care for and study the ocean, travel to new locations, embark on research expeditions, treasure hunt, etc - and have essentially managed to convince Sabori that it is still considered "looting" if they took ocean debris or dug up old forgotten "treasures" from the ocean floor.

Collectively as a group, the only crime of theft that they have committed involved items that didn't belong to anyone. But of course that isn't enough to stop Sabori from picking up other people's belongings that she finds along the way when their backs are turned, which is where their "no good" reputation as pirates has come from. Haven understands the truth of the situation, but their allies in the Glade for example... were not as clued in for a long while.

As defensive as Maris wants to be about the good name of her more innocent Charges, she can't exactly take it too personally when an outsider generalizes and assumes that Sabori runs rampant with no restrictions and that her crew is just like her. Raynan, Maris, and Shih have always done their best to be on top of keeping Sabori in line, but when Sabori does successfully manage to steal something, that is what others learn about... not the other 5 times she was thwarted before that point. Regardless, Maris and the other pirates have kept quiet in their understanding that there is no excuse for Sabori's actions (selfishness, ignorance) even if those actions are outside of the crew's control.

As of right now, the crew of the SS Maris is all-female. No one thought that started out as an intentional stipulation for recruitment, but Sabori insists that "boys on a pirate ship would be a curse! you don't want to be cursed, do you?!" She herself doesn't understand WHY it would be a curse, just that this is A Pirate Thing, she's sure of it. At least she thinks so and therefore she will enforce that rule for as long as she is Captain.

As for everyone else, they had been under the impression that they had simply been looking for treasure all this time, so they don't really see why "No Boys Allowed" or pirate curses are so important. Not that they will openly question it.

Honestly, the real concern would be that any tiny Fae who sets foot on Maris' back is going to end up being adopted by her as her Charge. No takebacks. Ever. The moment their little feet touch down, something awakens in her like "this small dragon is my responsibility now, I must protect" - it is her mission in life, the pact is sealed.

as solid as this little piratey love puddle is, I'm sure that they would not mind if one of their beans also wanted to mate up with another dragon who wasn't part of the puddle. but potential mate/partner would still gotta be okay with sharing the bean because Maris, for one, would be like "you cannot keep. only borrow. no keep."

Sabori, on the other hand, would probably view a pirate fae marrying another guardian as something more akin to "cool, another ship for the fleet" rather than a potential love interest for herself XD

marrying one pirate would certainly end up feeling like you've married the whole lot. with Sabori being more like that super annoying in-law you hate visiting asdhklf

pirate puddle is mostly bonded together because of Maris and they all kinda have different layers of dynamics going for them that keeps their unit functioning so closely together. they all love each other, albeit in slightly different ways, and I've kinda started shipping Sabori and Shih harder because of stuff I haven't managed to write down yet, so there is wiggle room for flexibility there when it comes to how the others would feel about something like that popping up outside of their unit. but essentially Maris is the biggest factor here with her "all faes mine"
