Choi was born in the Shrieking Wilds to a clan too chaotic for her already chaotic mind. Too anxious to go to war like her siblings, too anxious to travel out into the world on her own, too anxious to really look at anyone for fear of judgement, too anxious too anxious too anxious - no one was really sure what to do with her. She was content to sit by herself in The Hive away from all the other hatchlings, playing only with small trinkets she'd find and half-crying apologies if someone would question her about it, no matter how kind they were. "Isn't there something we can do?" "She's so anxious it's preventing her from living her life." "Like one of those ratty-looking dogs that shake like a leaf at so much as a breeze-- oh, sorry." Despite attempts to help her warm up to Glade life or at the very least develop a slightly thicker skin for her own good, she continued to be a nervous wreck. Her flight into the Zephyr Steppes came about as something of "short notice"... considering she happened to wander onto the Glade's catapult while chasing after a bug and then got launched before she could realize what was happening. In her young, panicked, and confused mind, it was clear to her that the Gladekeeper was disappointed in her failure to toughen up and wanted her gone to be someone else's problem. She had arrived in Haven shortly before Artan's unfortunate landing, so part of her thought the coincidence meant he had come to take her back to their birth clan. As if the Windsinger had really dragged Artan here himself just to get rid of her..... but what if he did?! Choi is a bit of a nervous girl, but she accepted Sabori's offer to join her pirate crew because it was more convenient to have a ride out into the deeper waters where she could get directly at what was out there and then have help carting her findings home. When she learned of the Harpy invasion that subsequently followed Zinfandel's arrival to the Glade, the thought occurred to her in her mind that perhaps the Gladekeeper hadn't catapulted her away to get rid of her but to save her instead. Regardless of whether or not such a thing was possible, it eases her anxiety a bit to imagine it.

When Artan saw her, he did recognize that she was formerly a Glade dragon, but since he doesn't pay attention during clan meetings (instead preferring to stare at pretty dragons because that's much more fun than politics and diplomacy) he couldn't recall that her presence in Haven was of particular significance to his concerned clan. And since Choi was too anxious about revealing where she came from out of fear that Haven would "agree with the Gladekeeper" that she was too weak to be wanted, no one in Haven thought to ask about her either. After all, she hides her Nature eyes because she feels like they're a dead giveaway.

Due to this, it wasn't until a very long time later that Artan casually recounted the time she ran away from him while lamenting about a spurned love to his father... and fortunately Panacea is a much better listener than his son, so he put the pieces together quickly. Once Eleodoro and Darter were made aware of their missing child's whereabouts, they made the trip out to Haven... where they waited for roughly two weeks for Maris to swim to shore with her crew.

Eleodoro was calmly embroidering while Darter, true to her name, was worriedly fluttering around him... until the saw her for the first time since she had disappeared.

Choi was out having herself such a good time just finding pretty treasures, comes back to see her parents there clearly looking for her, and then PANIC
a million thoughts whirring through her brain
oh no, do they want to take me back home? did the Gladekeeper change her mind about me? are they here to yell at me for disappearing without telling them? what if I really worried them? what if I'm a terrible daughter because I never tried to tell them I was here? DID ARTAN SEND THEM BACK TO GET ME BECAUSE I RAN AWAY FROM HIM?! THE WINDSINGER REALLY DID HATE ME BEING HERE THIS WHOLE TIME! ;;A;;



This would have to take place after the harpy invasion probably, which she may not have heard about until she reunited with her parents anyway because she has been avoiding conversation about the Glade in order to avert suspicion of her origins. I guess every time another catapult baby lands in Haven, she'd be worried that they were here out of a similar fate. When Maris decided to start hanging out with her, they outwardly bonded over their shared love of the ocean... but deep inside Choi also got attached to her because they both landed here via the catapult, though she wouldn't say anything about it because she didn't want to out herself.

It also has to have happened before the Glade gets wise to the pirates' shenanigans and starts to resent them because, by that point, the parents are aware of their children being involved.




For a while, Sabori had an... unhealthy tendency to snatch pets without thinking the situation all the way through. First was Moss' poor Gravel and then came the nudibranches. The fate of Sabori's short-lived Chicken Excavation Squad became widespread knowledge, but the nudibranches managed to slip under the radar.

There were a few problems with this that became immediately apparent:
1) Sabori got bored of the nudibranches very quickly,
2) Sabori barely had an understanding of what nudibranches were, much less any ideas about what they ate or how to care for them,
3) Sabori had been unable to figure out how to open the sphere to deliver food to them anyway.

But Choi took one look at those five funky lil dudes vibing in their sphere, both a protection and a curse, and felt like she could understand them. There was a whole big world out there and they were trapped inside this tiny bubble, forever just trying to survive despite the many dangers that could befall them. She had been too afraid to ask Sabori if she could keep them, but her very obvious interest in them did not go unnoticed for long and so they were offered to her. With a little trial and error, Choi learned how the magic in the bubble worked and did her best to keep her new friends alive. She liked spending time with them - observing them calmed her nerves and she felt like she could speak to them without judgment - so she soon became very attached.

Once Sabori started gaining more self-awareness about her unruly behavior, Shih helped her review her ill-gotten goods in order to trace back their origins, which is how it came to everyone's attention that the nudibranches had once been Nilaratan's beloved pets. This realization was a heavy one for the pirates who knew just how important they had come to Choi, but it was clear that they had to tell her.

Choi was torn between feeling guilty about not asking to locate their original caretaker sooner, anxious that Nilaratan would be mad at her for keeping them for so long, and sad that her emotional support buddies should probably go home to someone who likely missed them a great deal. She had known she would eventually have to face this situation; the fact that there had been a chart listing out names for each of the nudibranches stuck to their glass case had made that very clear.

Nilaratan is DAD UNTL THE END he jjust wants everyone SAFE AND HAPPY and if it had been someone less anxious or...attached,, he probs woulda asked for them back [bcus pets] but he knows enough about choi to [in the glade, where she can't hear it] sigh and start drafting up detailed [but not Difficult] care details that he thinks she might need.

he probs practiced it with one of his kids or a labmate just like "look i know my tone is difficult at times and this person is gonna be very worried WORK WITH ME HERE" He's like. He's good for anxious dragons that just need things laid out straight. He doesn't say mean things but he doesn't sugar-coat excessively either. which he knows some dragons need so, Practice


Choi starts out nervous when she sees him, standing there holding the tank as though she isn't quite sure she's ready to return it, and can't quite contain her curiosity when she realizes he didn't come emptyhanded even though her brain won't let her think for even a second that these are gifts for her when she did something so bad... but then he's praising her efforts and telling her she can keep her lil friends and those really are gifts for her so she can take care of them even better !!!!
