Biography
Frosted wings shuffled close to scale hide, but little warmth did it bring. The Icewarden’s domain was made to whittle down the weak -- only the strong could pass through the raging blizzards still breathing. The young skydancer held in the maws of imperial parents was neither strong, nor weak. What she was, however, was a survivor. Hatched from a molded egg, the only of her clutch, her parents who watched with concerned eyes were expecting the worst. Either the egg would never pip and they would have to try next season (if they did) or the child that did would have a very rough time. On the good side of the scale Velara was by appearance perfectly healthy and would be seen to be capable of surviving on her own. The bad side; it wouldn’t be easy. Within days of wrestling out of her egg, Velara grew gravely ill and nothing the healers around them offered could help. The magic in the Ice Flight wasn’t enough to break the fever that festered and grew dire. Many healers believed the hatchling had few days left, and others were surprised she was still moving. |
Time was of the essence, with every second Velara was getting sicker and sicker; and with the words of rumour the imperial pair set off to the lands of the Arcanist in hopes one of their mage’s could help. Whether their travel was meant to lead them scarcely into Arcane territory, or further, a ridgeback by the name of Sula had greeted their arrival. At first with bared teeth alongside a pair of imperials at her heels. A border patrol with the intentions of removing unwelcome guests. But with a second glance, Sula had ushered her clan-mates on a head with clipped words and soft eyes given to the pair and their hatchling. Brought to the heart of the clan’s territory, a white skydancer was there to greet them with kind yet tired eyes. While no promise was made to cure the young skydancer, the pair had passed along their child with hope placed on the healer. Little did they notice the Icewarden’s mark in Pearl’s eyes, too distracted by the air of arcane. Awkwardly did the pair rest in the center of camp, watched by many a dragon. Snarls and waves were given all at the same time, as half the clan wanted to feast and the other wished them well. Only when day broke after a dragging night did they see the white skydancer again, a similarly coloured imperial at her heel. Without the hatchling, imperial parents had their maws fallen in anticipation of unfortunate news. Pearl had shared their frowns, but not because she was going to announce the death of their child. Velara would be fine, her fever was breaking, and in the coming days she would be able to prance around the clearing. What caused her down look was that Velara would need to stay with her in fear of the illness returning. The imperials had a life in the Icewarden's domain. They had responsibility and family — they couldn’t so easily uproot themselves to move to Arcane. With mournful goodbyes, they chose to leave their only child in the care of Pearl and her mate Virtuoso in the Clan of Counting. Velara would be taken up as Pearls second and taught the ways of magic and remedy. She would be a powerful mage in the footsteps of Pearl — and find love in scarred hide and plague eyes. |
