Matt is a bundle of contradictions and mysteries. Why does a dragon from Dragonhome look like a wind dragon's kite? How can someone so talented and clever be so completely lazy and apathetic? Since he is lazy and apathetic, why did Kira allow him in the clan at all, let alone give him so many important responsibilities? If he's such a vicious fighter who kills so quickly—and he is, and does—why is he always bandaged, always in the same places? Why does he never actually seem injured? What's with the goggles and the weird bird skulls?

If any of this ever comes up in conversation with him, he doesn't get defensive. He doesn't seem like he has anything to hide. It's strange, though, how the conversation always drifts to a different topic before anyone can get an answer out of him.

All that aside, Matt is a talented fighter, nimble, strong, and always in motion. There are others in the clan, like Dorian, who are stronger, but none who can match his speed or his complete indifference to rules of honor or common decency.

When the clan was smaller, he and Dorian fought alongside Kira. Now that the clan has more dragons who can fight, Kira has given him the responsibility of training new fighters, both those who will that remain with the clan and those who will go on to serve the Lightweaver. He's popular with his trainees, but sometimes it seems almost like he's too easy on them, because outside of a life-or-death situation, he's an easygoing guy. Still, whenever Kira challenges him, he points out that he's getting good results in a short time, and isn't that what matters? What this means is that the clan, and in particular the warrior branch, is full of people who've been trained to obey Matt. If Kira didn't trust Matt so much, he might be concerned about that. Since he does trust him, it just means Matt is the first person Kira goes to in an emergency situation.

When he's not training young dragons, Matt is the clan's technician. The lightning dragons in the clan sometimes resent what they see as favoritism. Surely they're more qualified to take care of the lair's technology? Surely their natural talent is greater? Why is Matt given the job just because he's Kira's favorite? The truth is, though, although Matt is fascinated by machinery and architecture, he won't take it upon himself to make potentially dangerous alterations to the lair without discussing the matter with Kira first. He saves his urges to fiddle and experiment for smaller, less important items.
