╭
If you ask anyone in the clan, they'll tell you Rainier's role is to entertain: to amuse the hatchlings, perform dances for adults or give dance lessons to other Spirals, and generally keep morale up. They won't be disrespectful about it. It's important to look after the clan's emotional well-being, and it's not like Rainier won't lend a hand if something more substantive needs doing. But a few dragons—Kira, Matt, and Dorian, of course, but also Misa and Calliastra—would know that they were lying. Rainier does love to make people laugh and lift their spirits. But when Kira needs a spy, he goes to Rainier. That happens more than an outsider, or even a typical member of the clan, might think. The clan itself rarely gets involved in disputes; after all, dragons will say, their diplomats are skilled, and Kira provides them with almost infallible guidance. But that guidance is shaped by the information Rainier gets for him. Rainier doesn't spy because the clan has enemies; he spies to make sure it never acquires them. But Rainier is a strange choice as a spy. He seems incapable of not drawing attention to himself. From his manner to the markings on his back, everything about him is bright, happy, and very visible. His favorite trick is to dress as a magician from the Tangled Wood, while wearing a mask that allows his yellow eyes to shine through. The effect is of an entertaining, friendly fake: a light dragon pretending to be a shadow dragon, as entertainers often do. People have fun with his card tricks, admire his dancing, and move on. Unfortunately for them, they've been taken in by his disguise after all. He wants people to notice the eyes and dismiss him as just an actor. In fact, he has more experience with the Tangled Wood than most. He might not be a true shadow dragon, but he spent time there as a young adult, studying them and gaining friends and allies for the clan. While there, he learned trickery, sleight of hand, and, more relevantly, deception and disguise. The markings on his back aren't painted on, either. Nor are they decorative. The shapes have properties that help him blend in. If he chooses to invoke them, he can go anywhere he wants, and the magic in the markings will fool almost all dragons into thinking it's perfectly normal for him to be there. After he leaves, they won't quite forget he was there, but his presence will seem so reasonable to the dragons who remember him that they'll barely think about it. In short, he is very effective at his work. Matt is his father. His mother is a pearlcatcher who tired of the prejudice she faced in the clan and left to serve the Lightweaver not long after Rainier's birth. Matt never seems to miss her, but Rainier remembers her fondly and sometimes wonders how she's doing. The clanwide disdain for pearlcatchers has never touched him. To others, it seems like he inherited all of Matt's curiosity and good nature, without any of the apathy or the startling bloodthirstiness. As usual, what others see in Rainier is only part of the truth. He's not as skilled in combat, but when necessary, he can be just as merciless as his father. This is due to his mother's influence. Before she left for the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, she taught him to be subtle and work around difficulties instead of smashing through them. Rainier rarely needs to eliminate an enemy himself, but Kira allows him a fair amount of discretion in his work. Therefore, when necessary, Rainier engineers an enemy's downfall from a distance, usually without being seen or working through others. In other words, rather than reject his father's ruthlessness, he's adapted it.
