To most of the New Moon Enclave, Kira is a distant figure. Clever, certainly, and loyal to his people; they can trust in his leadership. But with only a few exceptions, he remains emotionally unavailable, preferring respect and obedience to affection.

In theory, Kira grew up as part of another clan, but that theory is tenuous. Over time, there came to be too many Imperials in his parents' clan for comfort. His mother, a loner even by Imperial standards, volunteered to leave the lair for scouting and intelligence-gathering. That suited Kira's Snapper father's nomadic nature as well, so they left together and began their journey. During their travels, they found an abandoned egg and decided to hatch it and raise the hatchling, named Kira, as their own. Kira grew up wandering the edges of the Sunbeam Ruins, looking for information to help a clan he had never seen.

From his mother, Kira learned independence and reserve. From his father, he learned curiosity, thoughtfulness, and endurance. Because he's a Nocturne, he learned these lessons easily, and because he was a child, they grew roots deep inside him. Even when he left his parents to form his own clan with Misa, he remained what his parents had made of him.

Because of his relatively solitary upbringing, he prizes his individuality and sense of self. This is a difficult feeling for a Nocturne to live with. When he spends too much time in the company of others, he begins to feel the personalities of his clanmates overwhelming what he knows to be him. Thus, he prefers to keep his distance and have as close friends only those who understand his need for silence and breathing room. When he wants company, he spends time with his lieutenants, Matt and Dorian. He cares for his mate, Misa, but he sometimes finds her to be too loud. His familiar seldom leaves his side, but perhaps this is because his familiar is very quiet.

He takes his responsibility seriously as the leader of the clan. His decisions are impartial, he's always just if not often merciful, and he does his best to assign responsibilities based on the needs and abilities of his clanmates. He's selective about who he allows to join, and his clan is therefore smaller than it could be, but they work well together and there are few clashes of personality. If a dragon is lucky enough to be accepted into Kira's clan, they'll be safe and prosperous for the rest of their life.

He has a particular bias towards Imperial dragons, and insists that he's taken enough precautions that it's safe for them to live together in his clan in numbers. The specifics of these precautions are known only to the Imperials themselves and to Dorian and Matt. Unfortunately, he has a corresponding disdain for Pearlcatchers, which, over time, has spread and become a clanwide prejudice.
