The Dream Therapist

⚜ ⚜ ⚜

Hailing from the Wispwillow Grove, the kind-hearted Haven is a master at illusionary Shadow magic. He specializes in dream magic, and he is able to create lucid dreaming potions that allow dragons to explore their dreams without fear of waking up accidentally. At the start of each session, he gives one of these potions to a patient after making sure they are relaxed. With the help of a special gem fastened to his hat, Haven shares dreams with them as they both nap in his room.

His room in the Clan's den is quite unlike any other in the mesa. Rather than the clean yet comfortable aesthetic of the other dens, it closely resembles that of a log cabin. Thick tree trunk halves cover every inch of the walls, and instead of bluish-white recessed lighting, there are hanging lights that provide a warm yellow glow. A large collection of candles adds to the cozy atmosphere, sitting amongst pungent potion-making ingredients on wooden shelves along one wall. And most charming of all is the large fireplace that Haven requested, which has proven to be the favorite resting spot of many dragons.

The room Haven treats his patients in, however, is not the one in the waking world. Once asleep, he brings his patients to the recurring dream he can summon at will, a spacious log cabin with a living room that looks almost identical to his den room. But there are a few notable differences: the wooden front door; the windows, which reveal swirling galaxies outside; and the shelves that are lined not with ingredients, but with neatly organized and labelled bottles. These bottles, which seem to contain various scenes, hold the favorite dreams of his patients so that they may return at any time. To enter their own dreams a dragon must step through the front door, which opens to a portal, the destination usually set by their subconscious or a dream potion they drank. Haven travels through these dreams with his patients, working with them as they navigate what their subconscious is telling them.

Serenity and Haven have grown quite close, and aren't exactly helping to dispel the rumors of their love for each other.

Hyacinth is a fellow enjoyer of herbs and fragrances, and the two enjoy tea parties and exchange scented gifts quite often.

Ocean is a master of lucid dreaming, and it is usually Haven who comes to him for an adventure rather than the other way around.

Haven and Serenity

Heat radiated out from the blackened fireplace as hot flames buffeted the dry bonewood. The golden fire danced wildly above glowing red embers, bright pinpoints of sparks flying up into an endless chimney. Serenity stared, entranced. It was so different from the fancy electric heaters he had grown accustomed to in the Shifting Expanse, or the magical heat crystals used back in the Starfall Isles. The simple yet powerful fire bathed the resting skydancer in a warm glow as he lay before it, marveling at such an out-of-place feature. He breathed in deeply, the scent of ash mixing with the incense wafting throughout the room, and the scent of the cup of herbal tea that he had finished just earlier.

The pleasant crackling of the logs began to turn into a soft hiss, ending with a mighty pop that launched an ember out of the fireplace, along with a small fireworks display of sparks. Startled, Serenity nervously gathered his flowing white silks closer to his body, watching as the heat quickly faded from the charred woodchip. A long golden brown tail, thick with flowing blue-tipped fur, reached over and brushed the ember aside. His trance quite broken, the counselor looked over his shoulder to see the tail's owner, Haven, behind him, taking a thick cream-colored blanket out from under his wing. The rather massive tundra gently wrapped it around the skydancer, making sure to tuck all of his delicate garments and feathers inside to protect them from the wrath of the fireplace. He craned his head towards Serenity, his gold-and-brown forelock falling over his face. "Are you comfortable?"

Serenity stared for what felt like forever, in awe of the dragon before him. His rich, chocolate-colored fur was a patchy mixture of stripes, rings, and gold spots, while his wings, mane, and tailtip were infused with swirls of magical blue. A playful sorcerer's hat of the same blue color perched atop his head, secured in place by his ivory horns. A charcoal-colored blindfold had been wrapped around its base, the ends disappearing into an array of bright orange feathers that framed his head. The counselor blinked. It had been only a second, but a second too long.

It was in that moment that Serenity felt grateful to be a pink dragon, for the handsome tundra was unable to see how hard he was blushing. His antennae trembled as he felt the genuine warmth and kindness radiating out from the mountain of fur standing next to him, like the heat from the fireplace in front of him. It was almost unbearable, but he was able to keep himself from fidgeting beneath his blanket. Still, he found it difficult to speak while looking into the mysterious therapist's soft lilac eyes, and barely managed his quiet response: "Y-yes."

Haven smiled with relief, the large fangs peeking out of his mouth only adding to his charm. "Well then. Let's begin, shall we?"

After gathering up the teacups, the tundra turned away, and once again Serenity could see how magnificent he was. A huge golden scarf flowed around his broad chest, and out from under it billowed equally golden ghastly arms. With ethereal hands they tenderly shielded the tiny flames of floating candles, and they expertly caught and replaced the dripping black wax, their palms darkened from the eternal effort. Cyan wisplights and blue flower petals danced between them as they worked silently. It was as mesmerizing to Serenity as watching the fireplace, but Haven paid no mind to the delicate objects surrounding him. He was busy crafting a concoction from the many herbs and potions he carried with him, his hands working just as swiftly as the grasps drifting around him.

Serenity waited patiently for the Shadow dragon to finish. Despite his nerves, he silently thanked his friend Hyacinth, the Clan's doctor, for pushing him to book a session with the lair's new therapist. He had been too shy to approach him during his welcome party, but now he could visit under the guise of a relaxing dream adventure. He only hoped he could make a good impression - which was partly why he chose an adventure session rather than an actual therapy session, as he couldn't be certain his dreams would decide to favor his image. The counselor subconsciously fixed up his light pink mane and adjusted his circlet, his eyes never leaving Haven as he focused on his work at his crafting table, back turned to his admirer.

Once the tundra had finished mixing and pouring, he turned back to Serenity with a grin, presenting a small round vial in his paws. It seemed to hold the entire universe within itself, with tiny sparkles of magic swirling in the purple and blue colors. "This is for you to drink," he said, handing the bottle over. "It's a lucid dreaming potion. It'll allow you to fall into a deep sleep in which you may dream as you please, and wake only when you wish to return."

Serenity took the potion with both hands, peering closely at the magical brew. With a nod of confirmation from Haven, he downed it in one go, expecting the bitter taste of herbs. Instead, he tasted almost nothing but fresh rain, and a pleasant tingle of magic that instantly calmed him. "So," he said, returning the bottle to Haven, "after I wake up, should I tell you about my dream?"

Haven chuckled softly, sitting down next to the bundled up skydancer and tending to the fire one last time. "No, darling. I'll be dreaming right along with you." He reached up and took the blindfold down from his hat, revealing a purple sphere fastened to the center of it. It glittered mysteriously in the firelight, matching his eyes almost perfectly. Serenity instantly recognized its nature - a channeling gem, much like his own atop his forehead. He tilted his head in curiosity as Haven blindfolded himself.

"This gem helps me focus my magic so that I can create a shared dream between us," Haven explained, tapping it lightly with one claw. "And don't worry, you will be completely safe with me."

His antennae twitching again from the tundra's reassurance, Serenity couldn't suppress a grin that was likely a bit too wide, and he would have been more embarrassed if not for Haven's blindfold. "Oh, I trust someone as sweet as you," he responded hastily, hoping Haven hadn't sensed how flustered he was. He fought back a sudden yawn - the potion was quickly making him feel drowsy. "Okay! I'm ready to sleep now."

"Alright." Haven laid down and rested his head between his paws. He curled his long tail around Serenity, offering its fluffy end as a pillow. Serenity gently nestled his head in warm fur, gazing at Haven as his eyelids grew heavier. Side by side, the two therapists fell asleep, warmed both by the fire and by each other.

With a peaceful sigh, the rose skydancer stirred beneath his blanket. He nuzzled his head against the floor, expecting the softness of a tundra's tail and feeling nothing but hard floorboards. Grumbling sleepily, he cracked an eye open to see that Haven was no longer beside him. Was the therapy session over already? He couldn't remember dreaming about anything, and yet here he was, awake in Haven's log cabin room. Serenity sat up in confusion, trying to blink the sleep from his eyes, but the dreamlike haze at the edges of his vision wasn't dissipating.

But something was strange about this view. There were too many stars, and they seemed to extend too far downwards, with no horizon to stop them. He sat motionless in front of the simmering fireplace, gears turning in his head. With his gaze fixated on the strange window, he didn't hear the floorboards creaking quietly nearby. "Ah, you're lucid!"

Serenity whipped his head around in surprise at the sound of the cheery voice. There Haven was, a lively grin on his face. A slight magical glow had lit up his eyes, which were free from their blindfold. He stood in a doorway that should have led outside to the halls of the hibernal den, but instead what seemed to be a kitchen could be seen behind it. As Serenity tried to make sense of what he was seeing, the tundra swiftly turned back into the kitchen, beckoning with his disappearing tailtip. "Come, I've prepared our lunch."

Scrambling to his feet, Serenity rushed after him. "Lucid? What do you mean?"

He stared, jaw agape, eyes darting between galaxies and nebulas. They were incredibly close, so much so that he could pick out individual stars. And the colors were unlike anything he had ever seen, encompassing so much of his field of view that there was hardly any empty black space to be found.

"I always wanted to see how many stars there were above the murky sky of my home flight, so when I created this sky based off of all the depictions of space I'd ever seen, I made it as beautiful as I possibly could." He chuckled, his gaze sweeping across the richly colored sky. "Of course, when I finally got to see it, it turned out I was dreaming far too big, but that's okay. I can still enjoy that dream. It's not like the sky's much clearer here at the Tempest Spire, so this will always be my favorite place to see the sky." Haven glanced over, watching the stars' reflections twinkle in the skydancer's wide arcane eyes. "Do you like it?"

"It's like home," Serenity murmured. "Better than home."
