______Vita Sanguis did not understand the weight in the air. The tension that crackled in the air and made her blood boil. She didn't know the words yet. However she did know the feeling of warmth that radiated above her. She tilted her snout up to look at the shimmering curtain that was her mother's clothing. The soft touch of silk caressed her cheek.
Vita Sanguis then looked to the source of the tension. His four eyes burned; the horizontal pupils were mere slits. The skeletal mask, bleak in its macabre and dull sheen, was sporting a fresh array of claw gouges on the grey beak. Vita Sanguis trembled when she saw how his body shook and the low tremor of laughter echoed from his grinning maw.
Vita Sanguis squeaked when she felt a massive paw push her into her brothers. She felt her fragile translucent underbelly ache from the force.
"Return to the Hallowed Hall," rumbled Magna Mater, Vita Sanguis' mother and the mother of the scary Mirror that crouched a few tail lengths away. "Your siblings are not destined to serve the Arcanist in his fight."
"I do believe that is the first time you've actually struck me mother," purred Noctis Timore, "It is refreshing. However you know that we can not sustain so many mouths. The Crystalspine Reaches are too barren in resources."
"Then we will venture further out to collect more," stated Magna Mater, her voice hoarse. Vita Sanguis wondered why.
"You know that is inefficient," purred Noctis Timore. He stalked closer.
Vita Sanguis felt the malefic gaze of her brother fall onto her and her siblings. She cowered closer to her brother's stone grey side on her left. She heard him protest but didn't care.
"Let me do my job," hissed Noctis Timore, "It is by my efforts that our clan hasn't collapsed from overpopulation. You, after all, are the one that cursed me to this existence. Such a great mother you are..."
Magna Mater snorted. "You twisted your own fate. It is no fault of mine that you made the decisions you did. Lay a claw on them and I will stop you."
"Really," asked Noctis Timore, "I wonder what that will look like? You've never stopped me before."
"You in your cowardice kidnapped your siblings and others when I was away on important business for the clan. Not this time."
Noctis Timore's body arched like a cat and his claws raked the crystalline floor, as if he were eagerly anticipating something. Then, he pounced. Vita Sanguis squeaked with horror when she saw how fast he could move.
Not as fast as her mother though. Magna Mater's thunderous roar shook the entire nursery and there were distant groans, as if the Crystal Spire itself was releasing angry cries. Vita Sanguis' eyes could not follow the movements of the adults in the chamber. One blink of the eye was enough to see Magna Mater standing above Noctis Timore's body lying on the ground.
Noctis Timore's maw was still dominated by that vile smile. He was bleeding terribly and would cough in erratic spasms. "Ha ha ha...It would seem...that I...have so much more to learn...It's like being hit by the stars themselves...Ow...Ha ha ha! It'll take me a minute or two to heal from this one..."
Vita Sanguis felt a strange sense of guilt overcome her heart. They were supposed to be family. Why were they fighting? Vita Sanguis crawled out of the nest and walked toward her injured older brother. She felt her underbelly getting uncomfortably warm and noticed that she was glowing faintly.
"Oh? What is this," asked Noctis Timore, followed by another cough. "Why is your underbelly glowing like that, little sister? Don't tell me that you're pitying me."
Vita Sanguis looked at her underbelly. The red fluid was glowing warmly through her fragile translucent skin. There was something in her heart telling her to use the fluid. As if it were a good thing. Vita Sanguis said simply, "You're hurt..."
"No really," quipped Noctis Timore, "What was your first clue? The fact that I'm lying in my own blood or mother's remorseful expression above us?"
"Why must you be so difficult," sighed Magna Mater sadly.
Noctis Timore's laughter returned but then turned into a shrill shriek. "Ow!"
Vita Sanguis stumbled back with a yelp. "I helped your wounds..."
Noctis Timore was writhing on the floor. His wounds glowed a fiery bright light as Vita Sanguis' red elixir worked on mending his flesh. When the healing spell was finished, Noctis Timore was still lying on the floor, panting from fatigue. His horizontal pupils were as wide as moons.
"Oh sweet mother," panted Noctis Timore, "The brat has life magic like Quiescis Lillium...ow..."
Magna Mater nodded. "She does, that is why I named her Vita Sanguis. The elixir her body harbors is precious. Her underbelly is so fragile though, she wouldn't survive on the battlefields. She must not go to the Arcanist."
Noctis Timore rose to his paws on shaky limbs. "I know of an alternative... There is a clan... They could use a good healer..."
"Will she know love," asked Magna Mater, "Will they cherish her?"
Noctis Timore lifted his head and looked to Magna Mater. "As far as I care to know, yes. She will find a good home with them."
Magna Mater sighed. Her shoulders slumped and her eyes glittered. "You're going to take them all away from me...aren't you..."
Noctis Timore looked toward the nest. "Not this time," he said, "The Guardian is...necessary..."
Magna Mater sighed. "Be gentle..."
Vita Sanguis looked to Noctis Timore when he said, "Come with me. There are more for you to heal."
Vita Sanguis followed her older brother. She did not know of the kind of adventures that her future held, but she was glad that her helping him made him seem less...scary.
______Vita's breath was shallow, heart beating deep in her ears as her limbs shook, still aching in her muscle's. She could feel her belly glow, painfully warm as she managed to look up, look up from beneath the wing of a guardian, met with a ragged cloth of red that grazed along her head, as she felt the ground thumping with each heavy slam from the dragons thick tail that loomed above her protectively, a familiar feeling as she listened to his deep gravely breathing, watching the armor along his chest shift and tense.
King growled, gaze held tight forward, watching as the Sethris skittered away into the distance, uttering under his breath a slur of curses before tilting his gaze down, wing lifting, a low rumble from his maw as he huffed out low as he spoke, his words coming out gently.
"You are alone?"
Vita didn't reply for a moment, shyly stepping back. Her heart was still beating deeply and she felt pain ache in her limbs, still shaking, but managed to slowly nod, her gaze meeting his, blinking softly.
Purple to Red.
King furrowed his brow and his tail thumped once as he upturned his snout, sniffing for a moment as he let out a low grumble, eyes narrowing a touch in curiosity, the younger guardian looking away from his gaze.
"Arcane. Hmph. Far from home then. Why would you be this far, young one? What is your name?"
Vita did not say anything for a moment and looked over the guardian again, shifting on her paws. He was big, bigger than her and the creatures that attacked her. And a bit scary...but...
"M...My name is Vita Sanguius. And...and you are hurt?"
The guardian tilted his head at her words and looked himself over, the few scratches and cuts that lashed his skin, but nothing deep, and let out a chuff, smirking as he shifted to pull his banner away, smiling.
"Child, I am alright. They will heal and scar, but that is fine."
Vita frowned at this and tilted her head, stepping back as the guardian leaned down, before realizing no harm was to come and relaxed as he draped the cloth over her shoulders, voice coming out with concern as she shifted again.
"But doesn't it hurt?"
