Biography

Faeryn
Unwanted Inquisitor
Lawful Good

Midway up the Focal Point lies the home of Arcane's most hated dragons. The Celestine Academy, as it's known, is the headquarters and training grounds for the flight's most stuck-up and and self-absorbed organization. The Inquisitors. Or the Fun Police, as the rest of the flight sees them. In their own opinion, the Inquisitors are the most important group in the Isles – the only thing standing between life and the flight being torn apart by mutated monsters and uncontrolled magic. To everyone else, they're a cult that breaks into your lair, steals your experiments, and smashes your lab to pieces, just when you're on the cusp of a breakthrough. And then they have the gall to claim they did it for your own good! Really, they'd be less hated if they ruined things for no reason. Arcane dragons react better to pointless chaos than arrogance.

And few dragons better exemplify Inquisitor pompousness than Faeryn. Even after screwing something up badly enough to reassigned to the outskirts of Arcane territory, he still manages to think he should command respect from the clan. He's never admitted that being sent to Clan _______ was a punishment, but it was. Everyone knows. Reminding Faeryn of that is a good way to shut him up for a bit.

Faeryn, of course, acts like he's above such gossip. He speaks softly, in a voice made of equal parts gentleness and condescension, like a someone taking some mildly radioactive chalcedony away from a hatchling. But he's obviously not genuine. To Faeryn, Clan _______ is full of dragons so incompetent they'd be incapable of surviving without his guidance. Nothing seems to be able to convince him that his order isn't the Arcanist's greatest blessing to the Isles.

As an Inquisitor, Faeryn is well-versed in the traditional magic of his organization. It's built around the natural crystal of the Isles, using the chalcedony both to store enchantments and as a weapon. Faeryn prefers the offensive aspects, with his go-to attack being pulling crystal spires out of the ground to impale foes. He can also launch shards of crystal as projectiles, summon a crystal prison, and it's no wonder that he's mocked for being rigid and narrow-minded. He could serve to show at least a little creativity. But no, everything is crystals with Faeryn. Crystals grow around the collar of his cloak in combat to act as foci for shielding magic. He even eats the chalcedony sometimes!

(Nobody's quite sure if Inquisitors have to ingest chalcedony to work their crystal magic, or if Faeryn's just weird.)

Ustasi's entire existence is heretical to Faeryn for some reason to do with this magic. She technically isn't made out of chalcedony, but it's close enough that Faeryn doesn't like it. Yet, not even Faeryn would prosecute her for merely existing. So instead he comes up with whatever excuses he can to apprehend her. Such as claiming her overflowing magic is attracting the shade, or that she's been carving forbidden sigils into the fortress walls.

Most of the time, Ustasi doesn't even acknowledge him. Except to occasionally mock him when his accusations for accosting her aren't even forbidden by Inquisitors. He gets quite flustered when someone knows their laws better than him. (Nobody tell him Ustasi's been messing with his Inquisition books.)

When he's not acting as an Inquisitor (which is only when nobody's looking), Faeryn takes care of hatchlings in the lair. Or indoctrinates them, depending on who you ask. He firmly believes in raising young dragons with the proper virtues and a healthy respect for magic. And excellent combat skills. Who knows what sort of dangers they might have to face? Or what problems they'll have that can only be solved with violence? No hatchling that can't fight off a chimera could make it as an Inquisitor, after all.

Of the clan's hatchlings, Seren is Faeryn's favourite. The kid's got fight in him, and never gives up. He's a quick learner too. Faeryn gave the nocturne a sword once and let him go wild, and Seren only severely injured himself a little bit. He'd go far as an Inquisitor, Faeryn thinks.

He and Sundren have some sort of history together. But however they knew each other before, it's clear there's only hate between them now. Most dragons would rather test poisons for some serthis than be in the same room as those two.

If this One would ever Feel the Walls, they may discover what I truly Am.
