     Horizon the Scrier

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Worry long past took over. Merle didn’t want to think about it, but there was clearly something wrong with Horizon. Or, at least, not normal.

That sounded a lot better. The kid was just not normal. It didn’t sound much better, didn’t fix the pound of anxiety in his chest, but it was a little better.

Nemmerle squinted down at the pup, shaking his head. “I’m quite sure I don’t know, Merle. He looks healthy, both physically and magically. But, of course, the physical health of a Mirror isn’t my purview. Have you checked with Cruor?”

“Does he look like he needs to see Cruor?” Merle looked again at Horizon, seeing only a perfectly normal-looking Mirror pup. He looked quite like Merle, actually.

If Nemmerle had an answer, he didn’t get the chance to say it, because Horizon spoke up. “I feel fine.”

Nemmerle frowned. “I hadn’t yet ask you how you felt, son.”

Pouncing up and gesturing emphatically at his son, Merle looked at Nemmerle. “This is exactly what I’m talking about! It’s weird, right?” Horizon looked a bit caught off-guard as he glanced between the two.

Nemmerle looked between Merle and Horizon with a spark of curiosity in his bright eyes. “That is odd.” Nemmerle looked at the little Mirror and asked, “What you heard me say just now… did I speak aloud? Or was it in your head?”

Horizon smiled as though he thought the question was funny. “Out loud, of course.” He looked at his father and said, “You didn’t?” he asked as though Merle had said something. Again, Merle gestured at the Mirror pup with a single claw.

Nemmerle’s boney eyebrows raised. “Fascinating.”

Unlike his sister, Merle never had any potential love-interests among the Chase. Abbey toyed with every dragon passing by (though not intentionally). Merle didn’t seem bothered. Then, in one single night, all that changed.

Whisper, Horizon’s mother, was the leader of a Water clan constantly on the brink of destruction. They were small and surrounded by enemies. As an acknowledgement that Merle, deep down, really did want his own family, Whisper gave Merle Horizon’s egg and returned to her clan with the other two. Horizon’s hatchling days were spent among the Chase, aware that he had siblings and firmly entrenched in the idea that he’d one day make a fine monster hunter.

His father had no idea just how fine a monster hunter he’d make. Horizon was always on the odd side. He answered unspoken questions and seemed to do everything a bit out of sequence. It wasn’t until Horizon could form cogent sentences to explain himself that he wasn’t psychic, he was just seeing everything before other dragons thought it happened━usually just a few seconds, but sometimes up to five minutes beforehand. Even though none of the others had ever seen anything like it before, it was generally agreed that Horizon was a valuable resource and weapon.

Horizon enjoys his position of interest and importance. Nemmerle and other magically-interested dragons, of course, are intrigued by his natural abilities; but even dragons like Soren, hard to interest with anything, can’t help but watch him grow and develop. The most frustrating thing about the whole situation is that Horizon isn’t quite able to explain his abilities in a way other dragons understand. After all, Horizon was surprised as a pup to learn that he was unique in this ability; it was unfathomable to him that others made decisions without any idea of their immediate consequences.

Though other dragons feel it’s a bit below the young Mirror, he’s started out as a night watch like his grandfather. Horizon is happy, though. Like Water, he finds he fits in almost any situation.

Like his father, Horizon never much bought into the idea that all Talonok deserved to be punished for the actions of some of them. Riska agrees, though he is also of the opinion that justice and punishment should be swift and final. Horizon doesn’t get to spend much time with Riska, thanks to the Tempest Chase’s general attitude toward Talonok, but they’re working together to mend bridges. As a merchant, Riska delivers all manner of valuable goods and information, and he sees Horizon as a pile of treasure just waiting to be made. Horizon is protective of his abilities, and the two manage to get along just fine anyways.

━━ family ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Spade Tail Horizon’s closest family relation is his father, Merle. They get along as well as any teenager might get along with their parent, except Horizon usually feels exceptionally misunderstood. Merle does his best, but a child that constantly lives a few seconds into the future is difficult to deal with. Having a conversation that makes any sense is a challenge. Horizon has become more skilled at separating his perception from what other dragons see as reality, and is used to acting like he’s in the past regardless of what he sees.

Horizon’s mother, Whisper, lives far away with his two siblings, Haze and Ailona. Horizon has no idea how they are or what they’re doing but Merle seems to think they’re in constant danger, something like the Tempest Chase. Horizon sometimes thinks about going to find them, but he never sees himself running off to do so in the near future. He’s not sure why that is, but he has some faith that they’re okay and maybe he’ll see some of them, maybe all of them, in the future. Until then, he doesn’t worry. He’s sure they’ll meet him, or he’ll meet them, or somehow they’ll come together. And, when that happens, he’ll see them coming.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Horizon chose the surname Fargrotto in honor of both his mother and his abilities.
»
» Like his father, Horizon dislikes the burden of unnecessary objects. He owns even fewer trinkets than Merle does, and is able to pack up his things to be ready to leave in under ten minutes. He feels like he spends the majority of his time helping others pack.
»
» Physical fighting is a challenge for Horizon. By nature, it’s fast and messy, and Horizon hasn’t quite figured out how to carry out his plans in the right order (dodging the strike when it comes, rather than before, for example). The dragons of the Chase are sure that once he masters that, he’ll be virtually unstoppable.
