Children of the Quickdraw Gang grow up in a household-- or as much of a household an encampment comprised of flimsy tents under a sky full of stars can get-- full of what can more or less be described as sheer chaos. Most choose to embrace the same life of crime their parents did but a few do seek a different path, chasing a fate that won't end up with them shot and bleeding out in some deity-forsaken ravine somewhere. Their parents care little about what each hatchling eventually decides for themselves; this indifferent world will be neither the better nor the worse for it. >> of all fortunes to choose, jess does something unspeakable: she enters the service of a witch. >> she doesn't realise till it's too late-- the pay may be good and it's work she's carried out all her life (maiming, killing, digging the occasional shallow grave), but it is no easy matter, simply retiring from this job. when she takes her last breath, there's relief in her eyes. >> and then she wakes up, only to find the bright, undying, relentless gaze of her mistress crouching over her and the sickly yellow moon above. in that moment, she understands. the contract is binding. her soul is no longer hers to keep. it never was. -her Runes made more sense now, twisted as they now were across her back, shoulders, paws. Jess' breath shivered as they squirmed before her eyes as she tried to read them. A call from her mistress made her look up and dash to find out what was required. It didn't pay to make her mistress angry. -the hatchling had no idea. Jess swallowed heavily as he lead her Mistress and herself towards a parlor. His bright voice made her shiver as she glanced at her Runes. What was her Mistress going to do to him? | __________ |
