B I O G R A P H Y

Slake always had an affinity for animals. They took care of all the fauna that came their way--the cats, the dogs, the birds that called the Scarred Wasteland home. But Slake was not satisfied with the way their clan leaders ran their ways. Slake believed their clanmates were needlessly cruel to the wildlife, but knew not how to convince them to stop. It was likely their clanmated never would. The thought broke Slake’s heart. This was not what the Plaguebringer wanted for her children.

But hope was not lost. Slake watched as a messenger from a strange, far off land approached the clan’s boundaries. On his shoulder sat a little pudgy bird who cheeped happily at Slake’s calming presence. Slake was entranced with the bird and how it knew exactly what its owner wanted to say. The pearlcatcher had come seeking someone to keep his clan’s pets and livestock in line! Slake jumped at the opportunity.

Slake packed up their belongings as soon as the bird had finished speaking. They herded the two cats, three dogs, and six sentient slimes they had in their care into crates and left with Murmur. Slake had never seen the edge of the Wasteland before, only seen the tiniest sliver of the Twisting Crescendo in the far distance. The noise grew as the party drew closer, but underneath the roar of the cyclone, Slake could hear reedy music. The wind clans had taken something scary and made it into something beautiful. They could do that here, too.

_To Survive_

____Slake was too kind for the Scarred Wasteland. The pustules formed on animals and the carcasses littered around the landscape tugged on their heartstrings too much. They cared for the wildlife as much as they could despite their feral states. This earned Slake severe reprimands and punishments, but still they persisted. Though Slake’s elemental affiliation was with Plaguebringer, they could not survive in the harsh environment the deity had created. Slake left once they were able, taking as many critters with them as they could afford.

The Plaguebringer blessed Slake’s going. She knew what it meant to survive at all costs, and Slake was doing just that. Leaving everything they had known, even if it was cruel and hard, in order to pursue a happier life. Who could fault Slake for that? Some of Plaguebringer’s followers had a warped sense of survival. It was not about cruelty. It was about the preservation of life and tradition. It was Slake’s life and tradition to care for unlucky animals, and so that was what they did.

____Slake had not known at the time that the slimes they brought to the Windswept Plateau could reproduce. They had all come from failed experiments from the clan next door. The slimes, sentient as they were, had figured out how to escape their pens and gushed around the Wasteland until Slake had found them. They didn’t know how to care for slimes, but they were vulnerable, and so Slake took care of them. They ate what Slake gave them and didn’t leave a mess. Surely they were easy to care for.

Slake and the rest of the merchants here thought the slimes were just growing and getting fatter. That was obviously not the case. Slake woke up to feed their charges and found not six slimes but twenty-two in the cramped pen. They were all agitated, all hungry and nipping at each other in annoyance. Slake threw some food into their pen and went to seek Milan and Julian. Slake needed more pens for them, which Julian could build. Milan wanted them gone as they were now a resource drain. Julian came up with the compromise: open a pet store.
