Wingaloo had no teeth. Though the average dragon may think it was due to all the sweets their parents gave them, it was actually that Wingaloo just hadn’t been born with any. Wingaloo themselves was an oddity--along with no teeth, they were far smaller than average; were fixated on sweets and nothing else; and had misty, distracted eyes. Many of Wingaloo’s relatives steered clear of them, considering them a blight on the family’s tree. But Wingaloo’s closest family considered them a gift, and that was all they needed.

The little nocturne was destined to take over the family’s candy-making business. Their family showed them the tricks of the trade, hacks to make the process of candy-making faster or the end product more delicious. Loo Candy, named after Wingaloo when they were born, was a hit within the fire flight. Soon demand spread to the rest of Sornieth, and the business grew. Wingaloo was pleased with the growth and quickly opened shops in the other ten regions. Their secret recipe was a hit, modified after closely watching what dragons bought. No one was the wiser.

Wingaloo eventually moved to the Windswept Plateau, the most profitable region. All those hyperactive spirals, tying themselves in knots every five minutes . . . They were perfect targets. The new Loo Candy headquarters was enough to pull tourists from all of Sornieth. Hardly anyone noticed that more dragons went in than came out; Wingaloo made sure that no one from afar went missing. Many came seeking the secret recipe, only to foolishly find out later that they were in fact part of the secret recipe.

____Wingaloo kept two separate rooms for their candy-making. One was the showroom, meant for outside dragons to view. The other was for actual candy making, and housed bigger and sharper tools for ingredient measuring. Wingaloo’s other employees stayed in the nice, brightly lit showroom to make most of the candies, and Wingaloo alone had access to the other. Employees often sighted Wingaloo on their way down to the second candy-making room, leading another dragon. They often pretended not to see the two disappearing into the bowels of the shop.

When WIngaloo emerged from that room--alone, save for a new batch of little round cookies in their claws--the employees had already gone home for the night, forgetting the lost dragon, never to be seen again. The cookies were left to cool in an ice-box until morning, when other workers, none the wiser, set them out for display in the shopfront. The cookies were the most popular item by far, and many customers asked if Wingaloo would ever reveal the recipe. With a smile and a shake of the head, Wingaloo declined. If the public ever found out. . . .

____One day Wingaloo had just stopped growing. There was no rhyme or reason to the sudden stop, no disease, no environmental factors. Wingaloo was just destined to be small by some other outside force, if one was inclined to believe that. Those who were skeptics often traveled to Loo Candy just to ask why. Wingaloo tried to deter them by giving them tours and free samples, yet the skeptics always stayed focused. They always left disgruntled, however, as Wingaloo only told them this: “I just decided to stop.”

What kind of answer was that? A non-answer. Every part of Wingaloo’s life was dissected, from their upbringing to their long-term goals. It didn’t add up. Despite all biology, Wingaloo really did just seem to choose to stop growing. That mystery, paired with the taste of Loo Candy, led to conspiracy theories and unwanted loiterers outside the Loo Candy headquarters. Thank Flamecaller for Aristomache, who was bent on keeping peace in the clan. No one wanted to get stuck between a wall and a gaoler. Loo Candy and its legacy were protected as long as Aristomache was on Wingaloo’s side.
