The Captain's Daughter

by yours truly, crappy non-native English included

xxxxxxxThe storm raged, a loud wail of wind, lightning, water. The galleon wouldn’t hold. Wind, gusting so strong even taking off flight wasn’t an easy feat, dragging the ship from side to side on water's wave, as lightning struck from above all who dared think the elements would have mercy of dragonkind.

xxxxxxx- Collect sails! All to sails! Now! - Her father’s first mate ordered. Laila looked up, she was close enough.
xxxxxxx- I can go! - She yelled back, her knife went to her mouth as she bit it to slide up the ropes like a snake. She was young and agile, but so so nimble. If she tried to fly, the wind would carry her away. She couldn’t risk it.

xxxxxxxTying the sails would take too long. She was the captain’s daughter and so she made the choice.

xxxxxxx- Cut them! Cut them off! - She yelled at the other dragons arriving for the same task. The sails were cut and flew away with the wind. The cargo. So much they were risking simply for the cargo.

xxxxxxx- Wave! - Someone yelled.

xxxxxxxShe gazed at the horizon.

xxxxxxx- Hold on! - She warned, as a massive wave caught the ship on. It soared up and had she not given the order of cutting the sails, it would tumble overboard. But it moved along with the wave, and came out still standing.

xxxxxxxLaila returned to deck in a swift motion.

xxxxxxx- Father! - She approached him. - We have to abandon ship!

xxxxxxx- No! We can't leave the cargo behind!

xxxxxxx- We will sink! Let's leave it, it's not worth risking our crew!

xxxxxxx- Anybody who abandons ship is a bloody deserter! - He yelled at her.

xxxxxxxShe looked at him, disgusted. The cargo was important, but not worth risking their lives. There were only two water dragons there, Laila and her father. If the ship sunk, they couldn’t save all dragons.

xxxxxxxShe turned from him and pushed the crew away.

xxxxxxx- Fly off! - She ordered from the top of her lungs, as long as a thunder. - Abandon ship!

xxxxxxx- Wave! - Someone yelled.

xxxxxxxThe whole crew turned to the horizon. There it was. The wrath of the Sea. Looming in with each second, a massive wall of watery grave. Her eyes widened. She was made of that water and even she dreaded being caught in the middle of the fury of the ocean.

xxxxxxx- Abandon ship! - She yelled again.

xxxxxxx- No! - Her father roared.

xxxxxxxThe crew didn’t pay him mind. They took off, flying up, up and up as fast as they could and out of reach of the massive wave. The bigger ones helped the smaller, lightning dragons up front to dispel thunder from above.

xxxxxxx- Rashir! Leave it! - Her father’s first mate, her mother, yelled, pleading him to abandon ship as well.

xxxxxxx- I’m not going without the cargo!

xxxxxxx- Father! - She flew back to the ship, pulled her father’s arm as he ran bellow deck. - We have to go! If the crew is struck by lightning they’ll drown without us!

xxxxxxx- Then they are already dead.

xxxxxxxShe froze for a moment. Looked at the angry imperial before her. Consumed by greed, consumed by wrath, condemning himself and his crew. He pulled away from her in anger, disappearing in the darkness of the lower deck.

xxxxxxx- Laila! - Her mother screamed. - Come! It’s drawing near!

xxxxxxxShe couldn’t move. Could she help him? If she could carry enough of the cargo, maybe they could all fly off to safety. Maybe. Maybe she could…

xxxxxxx- Laila! - Her mother pulled her, despair on her eyes, tears on her eyes. - Laila!

xxxxxxxWater.

xxxxxxxIn less than a second, her mother’s deep orange eyes were dragged away by the massive pressure. The wave pushed them apart, the deck tumbled over the young bogsneak. Laila tried to reach out, but she was gone. Her mother was gone.

***

xxxxxxxThe price had been too high. The cargo was delivered by her father, crippled of a leg and a hand. Widowed. The price had been too high.

xxxxxxxThe wrath of the ocean was inside them, blue like their eyes. Her mother’s dark orange was gone. The price had been too high.

xxxxxxx- We are leaving.

xxxxxxxShe didn’t look at him, adorned in gold and pearls, a fine velvet black coat on his shoulders. The fancy hat and the golden locket. The galleon behind him had been painted in hues of white and emerald, the riches paid for their efforts well invested in a bigger ship. A fair price for such a rare cargo, but the price had been too high. Too high.

xxxxxxx- I’m not going.

xxxxxxxHe looked at her.

xxxxxxx- This is the second time you disobey me. I will not tolerate it. - He approached her.

xxxxxxx- Four of our crew mates are dead, mother is dead. No money is worth what we lost. We should have let it drop to the depths of the ocean.

xxxxxxx- From the moment they stepped on a boat without Tidelord’s favour they were already dead.

xxxxxxxShe did not freeze this time. She looked at his dark blue eyes, a much somber look than her cerulean hues. Even with all that gold, and all his riches, Laila found him disgusting. He was ugly, deformed and repulsive. Just looking at him made Laila wince in anger and disgust.

xxxxxxx- Then I may as well be dead too.

xxxxxxxHe snarled, and roared at her, who did not recoil, who did not wince. He was disgusting, not scary and he turned away from her, never to return. Laila stayed behind, broken arm and broken spirit, watching the ships that went sailing from the Navigator Harbor of Porto.

xxxxxxxThat was the maiden voyage of that beautiful galleon and it’s unsuspecting crew, who believed they sailed under a fair captain. In two weeks time, she would receive news of its shipwreck and of the death of all crew.

xxxxxxxThis time, there had been no one there to defy her father’s orders.

Make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain

I
LAILA

I
The surviving daughter of a successful merchant family, Laila longs for the sea, and for the thrill of arriving in a different port after every journey. Currently going through what many describe as a self-imposed punishment for failing to save her mother, she's exiled herself from the waves, forcing herself to stay out of the sea until she can finally be at peace with what happened.

Through her trauma she has spent a few years under the Navigator's Guild's care, until discovering her father's partnership with them, which led her to deny the Guild and all involved with them.

She currently resides in the Stormsbane Wharf, and helps build and repair ships.

silent tears in the middle of the night, anguish turned to disgust turned to hatred

She loved Mirena, she really did. For a few years, her company helped soothe the thunderstorm raging inside her. Her father's disgusting figure felt like a distant nightmare. But one day she rummaged through Mirena's files and discovered her father had been working for the Navigator Guild, ferrying relics and artefacts to the Royal Museum.

She loved Mirena, but she could no longer be associated with the Trading Company that paid for her father's greed, which had consumed him and condemned her mother. She asked Mirena to leave the Guild with her, and her mate refused. She loved Mirena, but she left.

A few years working odd jobs, Laila found solace in an older captain. Uiara Thawedthorn was a retired sailor, captain of a mighty fleet. The two shared stories on the sea and eventually shared a bed. Despite being much, much younger than Uiara, Laila is happy with this asymmetrical relationship. She knows deep inside she's only spending time with Uiara to soothe her longing for the sea, to sail once again. As Uiara tells her a different tale and story from her golden years, Laila feels another small portion of her heal a bit more, tale by tale, and hopes to soon be reunited with her true love.

At the moment, Laila works as Ship Engineer. She learned the craft from her mother, inventor extraordinaire, pride of the Great Furnace Forgeworks. Her mother taught her how to build ship pieces from scratch, how to fold wood and how to repair. Laila is extremely talented and charges a hefty price for her work, but most good captains will know it is money well invested. She will gladly serve any dragon, so long as they're not affiliated in any way to the Navigator Guild.

At the Pegleg Quay, Laila is often called Seaweed, and so her workshop was nicknamed Seaweed Menagerie, a shiplap building painted in dark brown and blue colours, sitting in one of the many warehouses neighbour to the Gilly n' Gull Inn.

xNotable Mentions

Unexpectedly Pretty dragon from my lair, by StygianZinogre
Normally I do not like Bogsneaks, but for some reason your lizard girl Laila speaks to me! Perhaps it’s because of her muddled cyan scales, reminiscent of the still waters at the bottom of a lake, or maybe it’s the shimmering silken threads draped over her frame, their color a resplendent teal that rivals even the purest of waters. Well whatever it is, it doesn’t change the fact that I’m deeply in awe of this girl.

This was such an amazing compliment, this is poetry! I cried a little haha
