cadmael is possibly the most technologically advanced artificial intelligence ever to be created on sornieth.
and, to slate's ever ire, he cannot take credit for the mechanisms behind him. cad, occasionally nicknamed 002 by slate, has incredibly mysterious origins. i mean, really. slate just kind of found him in a ditch and nobody knows anything past that.
slate did, however, save his life. he was the first dragon to join slate on his travels, a very long time ago now, and that only happened through an instance of pure chance. 002 was dying, damaged severely by an unknown assailant, and slate took it upon himself to repair him. you'd be hard pressed to find an exact reason behind this act of kindness beyond simple scientific curiosity.
and, to be fair, it probably was just that. in the beginning, at least. but, you see, cadmael is a very sentimental dragon. he's actually a little obsessed with slate. must be some internal "chivalry" program going a tiny bit overboard.
cadmael does have a certain knight-ish disposition, something that extends to all beings in need. although slate had never asked, 002, be it through affection or out of feelings of debt, has become a sort of bodyguard. a right hand man. a confidant.
this is very private information. nobody would know this but they themselves, but, the feeling is somewhat mutual. cad is the closest thing slate has to a friend, and some might even say that it's...
well. it's certainly something.
you must like a dude a whole lot in order to let him play doctor with your internal wiring every week. and slate must like him a whole lot considering he's the only one allowed within 6 feet without a warning glare.
but without slate, without everything, cadmael is just a guy. a soft spoken, justice-oriented dragon who, although quietly altruistic to the end, is not a man you want to anger.
especially considering he's a product of the shade, and nobody, not even himself, knows it.
