Biography

~From the desk of Chickweed Caraway~

Orchid / Clan Amaranth
═══════════════════════
My Location:
Somewhere deep in the Viridian Labyrinth, surrounded by more green than I knew existed. I’m a ways a way from the swamplands, but that is a poor landmark for such a large area.
Canopy Darter

Crimes:
I don’t think Orchid understands enough about law to commit a crime.

Bee Orchid

Questions:
Why do dragons choose to survive like this? More importantly, why does Orchid seem to enjoy it?

NOTES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Chiron has tried to hide me everywhere and with everyone who would take me in, and Corriveau’s minion managed to find me anyway. Now he’s trying a new strategy. He’s hiding me nowhere and with no one. What a joy.

I’ve spent two days in this steaming jungle and I’m already sick of it. The dugout I’ve been stuffed in is not nearly as comfortable as the room I had in Dinara’s court, and the humidity of the Viridian Labyrinth makes my feathers feel perpetually damp. I’m not sure if I could even fly like this. The density of the vegetation makes flying virtually impossible anyway, and it’s extremely claustrophobic. My only solace is the crate of salted herring Chiron left as part of my food supply and the deck of cards for solitaire.

At least I’m not completely alone. There’s a local clan who gave Chiron permission to hide me here, though they haven’t come to visit. Well, I had best go and try to patch up the dugout I have to sleep in. It rains every day here, and I’ve already discovered a leak.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: I met someone today. A member of the local clan was apparently too overcome with curiosity, and made it out to my dugout to say hello. She says her name is Orchid and she says funny things like “squito sarm” and “gebast” and I have no idea what she means. At first I was delighted to have some company, but I soon learned that she has little to no knowledge of the world outside the jungle, and her questions got increasingly annoying.

This is a common trait for young dragons, but I don’t have to appreciate it. She was especially fascinated with my pocketwatch, and nearly broke it while my back was turned. Fortunately, she left soon after, with a vague promise that she might visit again (but might not because it was a “big risk” to come here).

Well, I hope she doesn’t come again until I’m thoroughly bored enough to tolerate her.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Fortunately for Orchid, I’ve been bored out of my skull, and I was almost happy when she decided to visit. Apparently, she finds concept of dried or stored food revolting and was appalled that I had never hunted for anything more than the occasional fish. I tried to explain the concept of devision of labor, but she didn’t seem to grasp the concept.

She started treating me like a little hatchling lost in the woods and decided to the teach me to hunt for fresh food.

I tried to explain that I was getting old, and I had enough food for a while, but she insisted and practically dragged me out into the dense jungle.

I admit, the chance to stretch my legs was refreshing. I was too nervous to venture far from my dugout for fear of getting lost, but Orchid seemed comfortable navigating, and it was almost enjoyable until she showed me what we were going to be hunting.

Frogs. This obnoxious orange Bogsneak was going to feed me frogs. There was a colony of shiny, orange frogs congregated around a small puddle, and Orchid started prattling on about how to tell poisons frogs from edible ones. She told me that these were easy ones, and that if I moved very slowly, I could snag one without even having to hide.

I told her to go eat some tree bark, and that I wanted to go back to my dugout right then.

She was very quiet after that. She led me back to my dugout and told me that I should be very careful. When I didn't reply, she said a clanless witch lived in the area, and that sometimes a gebast (whatever that is) roamed through the trees.

This concerns me, but I decided I didn't want another lecture, so I let her give me one last pitying look before she disappeared into the trees. Perhaps driving her away was a mistake, but there’s no force is Sornieth that would compel me to eat a frog.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: My salted herring has officially spoiled from the heat and humidity, and I’ve no idea when Chiron will bring me more. I have other food, of course, but it’s not particularly appetizing. I’ve got a massive crate full of dried cockroaches, but I just can’t get past the texture.

Otherwise, I’ve gotten very good at solitaire. I’ve also started to explore the jungle. I’ve tied a string around a tree next to my dugout and I’ve been using it as tether to avoid getting lost as I go. I’ve been impressed by some of the flowers, and I may have even caught a glimpse of the witch Orchid warned me about. I’ve considered trying to fly up to the canopy, but I don’t trust my damp wings to take me that far.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Today, unlike the past few weeks, something actually happened. I was picking my way through the foliage when I felt the ground shake. It was distant at first, but the thumping grew louder and louder, and when the trees started rustling behind me, I felt compelled to hide. Fortunately, the Viridian Forest is full of things to hide under. Unfortunately, I’m a very white dragon in a very green forest, and don’t blend in very well.

I pressed myself against a tree, hiding underneath the ferns as best I could until the booming steps stopped shaking the ground and I could no longer hear the sounds of snapping branches. I decided that I had enough exploring for the day, and started back towards my dugout, only to find that my thread had been severed and I couldn’t find the other end.

I admit, I panicked a little. I tried to fly to get a better view, but the combination of damp feathers and a lack of space to get airborne prevented me for getting more than a few feet off the ground. I managed to find it after a few minutes of frantic searching, but my heart didn't stop racing until I settled back into my dugout. I swear I passed a massive footprint on my way back.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: To my surprise Orchid visited me again, this time with her brother in tow. Despite my rudeness towards her, she was just too worried that the “gebast” had gotten me. Her clan had spotted it tromping through my patch of the jungle, and she just couldn't bear the thought of it smashing the helpless feathered hermit to death. She even brought me several fresh snakes to make sure I didn’t die from my non-fresh food.

I appreciate her concern, but if she’s going start shoving frogs and snakes down my throat every time I see her, I’m going to start wishing that the gebast had gotten me after all.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Just when I thought I’d have to start eating the strange things that Orchid keeps bringing me, Chiron showed up with more dried cockroaches that I ever knew existed. He claimed that the salted herring was too heavy to carry in bulk.

Otherwise, he did his usual routine. He apologized for taking so long to deliver supplies, dodged my questions about what was happening outside the jungle, and made a pale promise about visiting more often. If he’s going to avoid bringing me fish, he could at least have the decency to share some gossip.

I told him about the gebast, and that maybe, just maybe it was time to move on, but he said I wasn't in any really danger. Before leaving, he made an ominous comment that this was the first place he’s found where I’ve been truly safe from Corriveau. That means he’s going keep me here. In this jungle. In this dampness. Forever.

Maybe it’s time that I take my safety into my own claws.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Since Chiron recently visited, I think it’s safe to assume that he isn’t going to check up on me for a least a couple of weeks, so I have some time before he realizes that I’m missing.

Orchid has agreed to see me safely out of the jungle. She said that she hadn’t traveled that far, but that her brother knew the way to the Tangled Wood. They’ve both somehow come to the conclusion that that bad Skydancer stuffed me here against my will, and are perfectly willing to help me escape.

At the start of this mad trek across Sornieth, I might have been content to be safe in a hole, but It’s gotten tiresome. Chiron’s gotten more suspicious of me, and while I’m confident he’d keep me safe, he’s grown more and more possessive of any information I might find useful. He’s served his purpose, but being tucked away in a backwater patch of jungle is not what I had in mind. I’m sick of hiding. I’m sick of being isolated and licking up the barest scraps of information. I’m sick of Chiron and everything he stands for.

So, I’ve got one night left in my dugout. I’ve packed up as many dried cockroaches as I can carry, sorted my notebooks, and carefully threw away a snake when Orchid wasn’t looking so she’d think I had eaten it. It’s going to be quite the journey.
