Biography

J U N E
| reformed guard | June was good at what she did until she started to think about it too hard. She fit in, for the most part. True, her eyes were different from most of her kind - her egg had been found by Seekers on a mission in the Starfall Isles - but that wasn't so unusual. Any eggs found on a mission were brought back to the Fortress, their occupants magically changed into Gaolers immediately upon hatching; it was a good way to keep the guards' numbers up. So while June was teased sometimes by others her age for her bright eyes and non-Ice heritage, she never let it get to her. She was a Gaoler through and though and an excellent Keeper to boot. But as she grew a bit older and more immersed in her duties, a very un-Gaoler-like nagging began to tug at the back of her mind. Weren't these Shade creatures just as alive as she? Was this the only way - locking them away like this? Couldn't they try to find some sort of cure? Eventually there came a breaking point: At the Icewarden's command, the Gaolers made their reappearance in wider Sornieth. Seekers no longer had to keep themselves unseen, and they set out in huge numbers. Though not a Seeker herself, June was able to use their mass departure to slip out of the Fortress unnoticed. She ran until her feet bled. A whole world rushed past her and she was terrified to stop and take it in. How did Seekers handle it, this warmth, all these different colors? She finally collapsed one night in the Viridian Labyrinth. She thought she might just let herself die. But she had ended up in the Deepwoods Clan, and the resident Tundras smelled her. She didn't smell like a friend, exactly, but it was something deep and important and it roused them from their sleep. En masse, they followed their noses to her. Hunter, who had long ago learned to trust Tundra instincts, followed them. Tye was the first to approach. June thought he was some sort of animal before he spoke and informed her he was in fact a dragon - she hadn't realized they could be this small. This harmless. Hunter, she recognized immediately as a dragon, and struggled to her feet in case she had to fight. But the Guardian was gentle, too, and told June to stay as long as she liked. June thought that wouldn't be very long. She was wrong. Each morning she woke to the forest's vibrant greens felt a little better than the previous. She found herself enamored with the Tundras, her strange little cousins, and felt especially close to Tye. Hunter, too, was a comfort to her: She was big and strong like June, but her first instinct was to protect and nurture, not hurt and imprison. And Hunter's granddaughter Cecilia was unlike anyone June had ever met, bright and creative and... beautiful. Her life now is good, even if she's still plagued by nightmares of the Shade creatures she used to guard. She's proud of the Gaoler she's become. |
