Notes from Field Researcher Mirale:

SUBJECT: UNKNOWN, ENTRY 1

The last child of the last nest. It hatched a day or two after Taraxacum left, and Epitome was in a bit of a mournful state, having lost both a beautiful child and the dark coloration of its mane in so short a time.

Despite the sour mood, it still oversaw its last child hatching. When it was a little Tundra drone that shook off its shell, Epitome looked disappointed and grimaced. It didn't seem to want to put on a little show of its distaste for it, not bothering to roar or growl or even bare its teeth. It just raised a foreleg up, intending to crush its child without a second thought. And yet...it hesitated, keeping eye contact with the bright-eyed child. The bright-eyed child...that was seemingly unafraid of Epitome.

Perhaps the child just didn't understand the imminent danger, and reached both front paws up to try to touch its parent, starting to burble and squeak in an attempt to communicate. Epitome shook, eyes wide, and slowly put its paw down. I was stunned, seeing Epitome show mercy a second time, something so...out of character for it. Why wasn't it attacking? What made this little hatchling so special?

I just didn't know, it was so difficult to get into the head of that monster...
I fully intend to study the situation further.

SUBJECT: HOPE, ENTRY 2

For the following two weeks, the child thrived. Epitome was usually rather simple when it came to names, and this child was no exception. Due to whatever it was Epitome saw in it the day it hatched, the child came to be known as "Hope". It was a fitting name, given the child was rather happy-go-lucky and carefree, nothing but hope in those bright orange eyes.

Most drones don't know happiness, or any emotions at all. They're just blank husks with no independent thought, no ability to think beyond the commands given to them by the consciousness. Whatever it is that's in Epitome's code, whatever its glitch is...it has to be responsible for the displays of emotion in its children. That 'glitch' is what's giving them varying levels of sentience, the capability to learn and adapt as if they were dragons. There are individuals in Epitome's family that interact peacefully with dragons.

Hope hasn't yet left the hive, but it seems to be far more a peace-loving sort than a savage like its twin siblings or Usurper. Many times I've seen it sit outside the hive, looking up at the sky from within the darkness of the gorge it calls home. Sometimes it even sits out when it rains, playing in puddles and just finding joy in the simplest things.

Epitome's watched it as it's done so, too. Perhaps it was just my imagination...

...but I could've sworn I saw tears in the consciousness' eyes as Hope played in the rain the other day.

SUBJECT: HOPE, ENTRY 3

Another week has passed, and Hope has grown much larger than its mother, and nearly as large as the savage twins. Despite its size, overgrown claws, and large incisors, Hope is still the same gentle soul it always was. It doesn't spar with Three and Eleven, shows no care for violence toward dragons like Usurper, and has no desire for perfection like Epitome. It just keeps returning to the same spot outside the hive, looking up at the sky and watching as clouds, birds, or even dragons go by. It stares longingly after drones that leave the gorge to hunt, clearly wanting the freedom they have to go explore.

I feel a little sorry for it, seeing how badly it wants to see
more than what the gorge and hive have to offer.

SUBJECT: HOPE, ENTRY 4

Today, Epitome joined Hope outside the hive when it had left to go do the usual cloud-watching. Hope seemed surprised when its colossal parent laid down beside it, joining its child in looking to the sky. They conversed in the language of the hive, although Epitome did most of the talking, its voice shaking here and there as it seemed to fight off tears - something I'd never seen from it before.

During a bout of silence in their conversation, Hope looked conflicted. I couldn't understand a lick of what they were saying...but it seemed like Epitome was granting Hope the freedom it wanted so badly. This was confirmed when, after a bit more conversation, Hope stood and stretched its wings, preparing for flight. Epitome craned its neck down and nuzzled its child lovingly, whispering something to Hope before, with a running start, Hope flew up and out of the gorge.

Epitome watched it go, and wept softly when it disappeared from view on the surface.

"THE WORLD IS A DANGEROUS PLACE FOR OUR KIND...HOPE. MOST WILL TURN YOU AWAY...AND OTHERS WILL TRY TO KILL YOU."

Hope tore her gaze from the shifting clouds above, instead looking to her tired father. His expression was difficult to read, as it usually was. She could sense he was upset about something, though she didn't know what.

"Why, father?" She inquired, "Why, when I mean them no harm?"

Epitome's gaze remained on the sky as he paused for a beat, considering how to answer such an innocent question. Alas...he wasn't known for sugarcoating things.

"WE ARE...ABOMINATIONS. TO DRAGONS...WE ARE MONSTERS. WE STEAL THEIR KIND AWAY AS FOOD OR TO TURN THEM INTO OUR OWN KIND...STRIPPING AWAY EVERYTHING THEY ONCE WERE TO BOLSTER OUR NUMBERS." He looked down at his youngest daughter, heart clenching at her wide, innocent eyes and the hurt expression on her face. "WE WERE DOOMED TO BE ENEMIES FROM THE VERY BEGINNING...WHEN BEINGS LIKE FRIGID FIRST BEGAN THIS NIGHTMARE."

"Father...you speak as if you don't wish to hurt dragons either. Why do you do it?"

The question gave Epitome pause. He was silent long enough that Hope nearly repeated her question, only to be cut off by him answering. "SURVIVAL...AND PERHAPS INSTINCT. I ONCE TOOK GREAT PLEASURE IN ASSIMILATION...BEFORE I MET YOUR MOTHER."

"My mother?"

"SHE WAS ONCE A DRAGON...A BEAUTIFUL DRAGON. A POWDER BLUE COAT...BLAZING, FEARLESS EYES...THE MOMENT I SAW HER, I HAD TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HER." He turned his gaze to the sky, watching a Roc fly overhead. "YOU REMIND ME SO MUCH OF HER...BEFORE SHE WAS TAKEN FROM ME."

She reminded Epitome of her mother...? Perhaps that's why she was treated so much differently than her other siblings. It wasn't...exactly kindness that made her father favor her.

"WHEN YOU LOOKED AT ME WITH THAT SAME...FEARLESS LOOK IN YOUR EYES...I COULD NOT BRING MYSELF TO HARM YOU." His voice was heavy with guilt as he hung his head, avoiding his daughter's gaze. "...I AM A MONSTER...HOPE. I AM HIVEBORN...THROUGH AND THROUGH." Slowly, he turned his head to look at her. "YOU...DO NOT BELONG IN A PLACE SUCH AS THIS. I DO NOT WISH TO TRAP YOU HERE...IN A HIVE, WHEN YOU COULD INSTEAD BE FREE."

Hope was speechless, heart skipping a beat. What was he saying...?

"ONE OF YOUR BROTHERS...TORY...HAS FOUND PEACE IN THE VIRIDIAN LABYRINTH. I CANNOT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE CLAN...BUT HE IS AT THE HEART OF THE REGION. HE LIVES AMONG DRAGONS."

"A-Are you saying I...I can...?" She swallowed thickly, eyes as wide as saucers. "I can go...?"

Epitome gave her a solemn nod. "YOU WILL FIND PEACE WITH HIM...I AM CERTAIN."

Hope sputtered, wanting to say a thousand things at once before she stammered out a single question. "How will I find him?"

A soft smile tugged at the consciousness' maw, and he shook his head slightly. "YOU WILL FIND HIS SIGNAL AS SOON AS YOU REACH THE BEHEMOTH. LOCK ONTO IT...AND DO NOT STRAY TOWARD THE SIGNAL OF THE GENESIS LURKING OUT THERE."

Tears filled Hope's eyes, clouding her vision. Freedom...she could fly free, and see more than what the hive had in store for her. The thought alone was exciting enough to get her to stand, eager to get going. Epitome, knowing that, leaned in close to gently nuzzle her. "GO NOW...MY CHILD. AND BE SAFE."

Hope nuzzled her father back, her response being a giddy laugh as she cried tears of joy. "Thank you, father...for everything."

After their tearful goodbyes, it was time for Hope to depart. She took a running start, then flew up and out of the gorge she called home. It was time to leave it all behind...and have a new beginning in the Viridian Labyrinth.
