Malkum and Jesper are both exuberant writer and voracious readers. It is common for other members of IceFallen to mistake one for the other as the two are busy-bodies who do not rest often, and would put a Spiral to shame for how rarely they stop flitting about. He keeps an extensive log of events in short hand, while Jesper enjoys detailing note worthy occurrences with more colorful language.

The twins write lore on each and every member of IceFallen. Together, they work alongside Zuriel and Iridel in the Rhimebone Catacomb Library. They attend every major event that happens within the IceFallen Territory and make personal notes for many of the Gaolers inside of the Fortress when called upon. It is the combined efforts of Iridel and Zuriel that refines and binds their hyper scrawling into legible, comprehensible volumes of lore to share with fresh generations and new recruits. Due to the sensitive nature of the information that rattles around in their skulls, they are fiercely protected and kept under constant watch by their own personal guardian dragon.

Miscellaneous Facts

The IceWarden. The Icewarden is female she/her pronouns. She is often referred to as "The Mother” by Gaolers and Tundra dragons. She resides deep within the Fortress of Ends guarding Ancient Evils not seen since the First Age.

Gaolers and Tundra. Gaolers are Viviparous dragons and their young are referred to as 'cubs' or 'pups'. (They do not hatch from eggs.) Tundra dragons are descendants of Gaoler dragons much like dogs are to wolves. This may have been achieved through specific traits common in outcasts or deserters, generating more varied offspring, especially for Gaolers that chose to breed with other breeds of dragons. Traditional Gaolers frown on either possibility and choose not to acknowledge their potential blood-relations to their softer cousins.

Flightless. Gaolers cannot fly. Snappers are often born without wings at all, or occasionally with a pair of vestigial wings. Wildclaws can only glide with their wings. All other breeds have varying proficiencies in flight.

40 Question Lore-Building Challenge

1. Write from the perspective of an outsider of your lair, what is their first impression? How have they discovered this group? How are they greeted?

IceFallen is a jagged black tooth of rock that juts out from impenetrable ice forming the greater Fortress of Ends. The peak of this mountainous formation is obscured by dense clouds of mist. At the top of a steep, hidden stairway an immense stone door bars anyone from entering or exiting this sacred place. Carved into the black stone is a tale depicting the founding of IceFallen: a horrific creature wreathed in flame diving from the sky, three Gaoler Ancients circle below, the ensuing battle is fierce and ends with victory over the beast, imprisoning it deep within the mountain fortress.

Common travelers do not often come this close to the Fortress of Ends. Miles of unforgiving and perilous landscape, harsh climates and scarce food stand between civilization and the Fortress. One would have to come with great purpose to this place in order to reach it, even so, powerful illusory magic wreaths the territory in wild snow storms and other deterring hazards. Beyond that, the Sentry Order guards the way fiercely. To reach the door and gain entry is to put one's life into the hands of IceFallen and the IceWarden Herself. Any hope of leaving lies in the purity of one's very soul and the gravity of their purpose for coming to the Fortress.

This is no place for the weak of heart or the feeble of mind.

Some rare few Ice dragons may hear the IceWarden call them to service here. These dragons are known as the Exalted, marked with Her sign that grants safe passage here. These children of Ice are met with solemn respect for their sacrifice of worldly comforts and selfish ambitions to serve a higher purpose.

Their home is nestled in a protected grotto that is hidden in the shadow of the Fortress of Ends. A statue sculpted in the likeness of the First Exalted dragon welcomes those who live in and visit this place, guarding the largest entrance. This monument honors the many Exalted dragons who have come since the First to serve the IceWarden and the First Children in their endeavors to protect the World from horrors both new and old. The network of caves both natural and dragon-made serves as a temple and a home for the IceFallen Exalted.

2. Is there a class difference in your lair? If so, how do the ‘lower’ ranks of their society live? If not, how do they maintain equality?

As cubs, Gaolers are trained by the CubWarden until they are old enough to choose an Order: Keeper, Seeker, or Sentry. A Gaoler who fails to choose and serve an Order is not acknowledged by Order Gaolers. Rarely a young Gaoler may feel strongly that they belong to the Overseer Order and challenge an Overseer for their post, more often, a Veteran Keeper may advance to the Overseer Order by the will of the Overseer Council.

Sentinel Order - Crafted by the IceWarden Herself, these god-like beings hold their posts within the Fortress of Ends. They are Her Will made flesh and blood, Her children. (*Note: Their attitude about the IceWarden IMO is similar to how loyalist Space Marines feel about the Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40K.)
Order of Overseers - This Order of Gaolers are judge, jury, and executioner for all within the territory of their Clan. They are looked to for guidance and form a council when necessary. They are guardians of Greater Horrors kept at maximum security levels within the Fortress of Ends. Each Overseer watches over no more than two charges at one time during their entire career and they serve this duty until the end of their lives. Unlike other Gaoler Orders, Overseers are either granted the title by the council of Overseers when considered worthy, or take the title from an established Overseer in formal combat. This uncommon challenge is often fought to the death.
Order of Keepers - This Order of Gaolers functions much like Overseer Order Gaolers, however they are more of a brotherhood and work more closely with Seeker and Sentry Order Gaolers. They delegate assignments, process incoming inmates, and work together among themselves in rotation to keep watch over the more plentiful Lesser Horrors and villainous beasts.
Order of Sentries - Gaolers who prevent intruders from reaching the Fortress of Ends. They work a strict and ancient perimeter in life bonded pairs or groups of three. In IceFallen, there are two factions of Sentries: The Dawnguard and The Night Heralds. They work in shifts respectively during the daylight hours or at night based on their specializations.
Order of Seekers - Hunters who chase the Horrors of this world. They work in packs of 5-10 Gaolers and travel the greatest distance from IceFallen territory, only returning to report, obtain requisition, or turn in a bounty. Gaolers who join this Order are often expected to live fast and die very young.
The Exalted - This is a special sect of Modern breed dragons who have answered the call of The Mother. They have abandoned material wealth and pledged themselves to the purpose of keeping the evils of this world locked away. They assist all of the Gaoler Orders from the Seekers to the High Overseer and hold many positions of authority within IceFallen. They perform most of the Hunting and Gathering for the Clan, an essential task to keep the Gaolers at top performance and eliminate the need to leave their posts for long periods of time. With the introduction of The Exalted, there have been more healthy cubs, longer careers, and overall more peaceful living for Gaolers.

3. How is discipline dealt out? Is there a legal system? Fair trial? Vigilantism?
  • The IceWardne’s Will is law, and Her Will is interpreted by powerful prophets and seers that may be touched by the IceWarden. (*Theocratic Authority) These prophets speak for Her to Her children, sometimes when Her guidance is sought after, and at other times when it is least expected. To the frustration of many IceFallen Gaolers, this connection tends to be more common in Modern Breed dragons. This gift has only been reported to be seen in Overseer Order Gaolers who are less willing to share what the IceWarden chooses to say to them.

More commonly there are unspoken rules and guidelines that all Gaoler have held in high reverence for hundreds of years since the very beginning of their existence. They hold one another accountable with no single leader managing the Clan’s inner workings. The Council of Overseers is the nearest entity that IceFallen has to leadership and this Council handles very specific and rare cases of breeches in protocol, processing of inmates, and war-time operations. Even this Council defers to the IceWarden for guidance and a final Word, sometimes waiting months or even years to hear a whisper from The Mother to resolve an open case. For the unfortunate offender(s) this means being held in a cell indefinitely until a decision has been reached.

  • Not every offense is handled by the Council of Overseers, sometimes justice can be managed between individuals. Insubordination is a sign of weakness of Will that cannot be tolerated within the walls of the Fortress. If weakness is detected among the Keepers, the offender is challenged by a group of peers. Their strength of Will is tested by a series of trials and there are only two outcomes: survival or death.

  • The Order of Keepers delegate bounties and assignments to Seeker Alphas and Sentry Captains, however each pack leader handles its own disciplinary action over their pack.

Insubordination among Seeker Order ranks is often met with trial by combat that may end in reassignment, banishment, or death. The circumstances can vary wildly from mere jealousy of rank to culling corruption. Seekers live out in the wild on the Hunt most of their lives and consider one another family beyond bonds of blood. To avoid loss of time, life, or limb to personal quarrels some Seekers may join another hunting party or begin a new pack when no agreement can be reached between the two divergent parties. There is more leniency among Seekers compared to those who serve within IceFallen territory.

  • Within the Sentry Order there are very few if any reports of conflict or insubordination. These Gaoler function in pairs or groups of three to four that are bonded to one another for life. They have an unbreakable loyalty to one another and the IceWarden that binds them. They have significantly more mobility than either Keeper or Overseer Order Gaolers, and still less mobility than the Seeker Order. They are a unique middle ground to either occupation. This Order of Gaolers function in a regimented routine that rotates with the sun.

  • The Exalted are a sect of Modern Breed dragons sanctioned by the IceWarden Herself to serve and work alongside the Gaolers. There is a small council of authority within the Exalted that is comprised of Her prophets. Other Exalted dragons may be assigned to authority figures depending on their unique purpose within the Clan. They are watched closely and protected fiercely by the Gaolers of IceFallen.

Should an Exalted break any of their vows they are isolated and interrogated by a council of their peers led by a Gaoler representative. If corruption by evil is detected the Gaoler representative takes full control of the offender and a cleansing ritual is performed to preserve their souls. This ritual often ends in the death of the corrupted Exalted, their bodies and minds not able to withstand trials made for and by Gaolers. Should the infection of evil be too great or immediately dangerous, the Exalted would be slain on the spot, their soul forfeit to the Horror that ensnared them.

  • There are no acts of vigilantism on record. Vigilantism is not tolerated or even considered by IceFallen Gaolers. There are no reports of individuals going against the IceWarden’s Will for any reason.

4. What are some unspoken rules? What happens if they are broken? Why are they in place?
  • Gaolers typically keep to their own kind when choosing a mate. It is an unspoken rule that has softened over time since the introduction of Modern dragons. Things change very slowly in this rigid environment. Some whisper that within IceFallen some of these stalwart creatures have found themselves infatuated with members of the Exalted. There is no punishment for breaking this taboo ‘rule’, however, doing so often causes a range of reactions from mild concern to unbridled disgust from more traditional Gaolers who would prefer the rule remained unbroken. These unusual pairs may choose to keep their unsanctioned bond very private bordering on absolute secrecy.
  • Inside of the Fortress, silence is expected from all who enter. No one is to engage directly with the prisoners of the Frigid Penitentiary besides their assigned Wardens. The prisoners held here are wicked, manipulative evils that wish only to escape, to destroy, to consume, and to survive. They prey on the weak willed who would dare seek them out. Those who break this unspoken rule are swiftly removed from the area and interrogated mercilessly. Punishment can be as severe as execution, life imprisonment, or banishment from the territory.
  • Outsiders are kept out of the territory by Sentry Order Gaoler. Ancient territory lines are marked with magic runes detectable by a trained eye. These runes inflict illusions of snow storms, predatory beasts, and various other deterrents from continuing in the direction of the Fortress. However, those who meander carelessly or become lost sometimes fall on the wrong side of the line. Trespassing without proper clearance or ceremony is punished without warning. The Sentry Order Gaoler are ruthless, territorial beasts who are not trained to ask questions. If an intruder were to escape with their lives it would be a mercy and a blessing from the IceWarden.

5. What do your lair members do for entertainment, at both a personal & societal level?

  • Overseer Order Gaolers are above ‘child’s play’. These dragons are content to read volume after volume of literature brought to them by the few Exalted dragons sanctioned to descend to their level of silent confinement. Each Overseer keeps a small cell of their own where they take rest between long shifts of vigilance.
  • Among the brotherhood of the Keeper Order, sparring matches are held to entertain off-duty Wardens during their rest period. These often develop into highly structured elimination matches with a single victor by the end of the night. Bragging rights and occasionally food prizes are wagered to peak the interest of fellow Brothers. This healthy competition boosts morale and allows Keepers to hone their martial skills between watches. Meal Time is another scheduled social occasion to see Wardens from other parts of the labyrinthine prison, or perform courtship.
  • The Sentry Order Gaolers may occasionally organize races or practice combat during rest periods much like the sparring matches held by Wardens of the Keeper Order. Some Sentry Order Gaolers prefer to hunt for their own food outside of rations prepared and delivered by the IceFallen Exalted. Sentry Gaolers run in pairs or small packs, making them much more socialized than those who serve inside the Fortress. Sentry Order Gaolers are much more guarded and loyal to one another since their bond is life-long. Their dusk and dawn shift changes give them the freedom to convene with other Sentries of their Watch, visit with the Exalted or even go so far as to socialize with other dragons in nearby territories.
  • The Seeker Order Gaolers have the most freedom of movement, often considered to have the most 'fun' of any other Gaoler Order. Regular gatherings occur in the wild under the Full Moon with food, drink, and games. They appreciate life for how precious it is, and take great enjoyment from a variety of competitions between other packs. These lunar celebrations are a time for socialization, catching up with nest-mates from childhood, courtship, and swapping allegiances between packs. Occasionally, Seekers and traveling dragons from other Clans join the festivities.
  • The Exalted dragons are interspersed among the Orders and share in the same festivities respectively. They are ultimately bound to serve the Gaolers, but they are respected as allies and treated kindly for their service, therefore, they are included whole-heartedly in most activities barring courtship. Within the Exalted Grotto, most Exalted dragons occupy themselves with a variety of personal hobbies.

Are there any important figures in history involved in your lair? Who are they and why are they significant?
The original Gaoler dragons that founded the Frigid Penitentiary were powerful beings crafted by the IceWarden Herself. They defeated the Burning Horror that threatened to lay waste to the land. This Horror still resides within the belly of the Mountain, but its original captors have moved on; exalted to become a part of the Sentinel Order guarding the IceWarden’s Pillar Section.

How has history constructed & molded your lair’s culture, morals and ideals, if at all?
It is a wonder that things have remained so similar to how they were when the three founders defeated the Burning Horror. The most significant change to order was many hundreds of years ago when the first Modern dragons appeared. Some of those dragons have been guided by divine influence to offer their services to the Gaoler Orders. They are named the Exalted and work closely with the Gaoler, they maintain the structures within the Penitentiary, restoring them so that the place remains free of time's weathering, and the Gaolers stay in top condition to fulfill their duties.

What is your lair’s attitude to nature? How does it work in reference to their architecture? Is pollution a issue?
The Nature of their home is yet another God-given challenge that culls the weak. The naturally occurring rock formations, sheets of ice, and snow drifts provide the means to survive if one respects these things and knows how to reap its benefits. The Frigid Penitentiary is kept immaculately clean, and very little pollution is generated given that the dragons do not keep Hoards or collect trinkets to clutter the space. Dragons rest in Roosts carved from stone at higher levels in the mountain closer to its peak. Everything is very utilitarian; the most decorative aspects of the Penitentiary are relief carvings depicting epic tales of the Hunt. The most recent addition to the overall architecture is the library built by The Exalted with the approval of the High Overseer. This is the one place where material wealth is kept and it is merely a chamber of stone shelves filled to the brim with volumes and volumes of history, fiction, and poetry.

What is the political climate? What are some issues currently in the public’s eye?
There is no questioning the purpose of this place or its leadership at this time.

Are there any customs around hatching? Who is present? Are there any members who specialize in the care of eggs or hatchlings? Are eggs ever hatched too early?
Hatchlings are often kept in a separate cave within the Territory, far from the jagged rock that is the Frigid Penitentiary. Their mother remains with them for short period of time before returning to their post. Before the introduction of the Modern dragons, a single Gaoler had been assigned to care for the children until they were old enough to train and choose an Order. Unfortunately, this was a poor practice given the Gaoler charged with this task was rarely equipped with the patience, compassion, or skill to rear children. Since the Exalted dragons became a part of IceFallen, some of these dragons have been assigned to live in the cave with the young to help raise them. This has rendered a lower mortality rate and produced some of the very best mages and diplomats to date since the clan was established. This cave is often empty due to the low reproduction rate of the Gaoler of IceFallen.

Does your lair have any slang, insults or jargon? If so, what is it, what is it’s origin, use and is it exclusively used by certain groups?
None on record.

Are there any specific greetings or goodbyes present? Does it differ at times, events or relations? Where do these greetings/goodbyes originate?
Gaolers that are raised and stay in the territory tend to only make sounds or speak when absolutely necessary. Gaolers throughout every Order will bow their heads silently in greeting while within the fortress. Higher ranking Overseers will nod, not entirely lowering their heads to another being. This is a sign of trust and respect. This gesture goes back to the original Three. Seekers and Sentinels use a series of howling sounds to communicate at long distances. A ’High-five’ given by the small wings of the Gaolers has been seen throughout younger Seeker and Sentry Orders as a more casual greeting that can be done quickly and without risking vulnerability to any unseen threats. This may have been learned from Modern dragons as the breeds integrated. Credit @Blazing

What level of technology do they have available to them? Is it similar to ours, or specially adapted to solve issues relative to their world? If so, who has made this technology available to them?
Most tools are very basic. Many of the jobs done around the territory are handled by with masterful craftsmanship, patience, and occasionally the introduction of arcane infusion.

How do religious beliefs play a role in everyday life? Is there an organized clergy?
All are loyal to the IceWarden, each one ordained to carry out a life long service to their God.

Who holds authority or is looked up to in their society? Do they hold any real power, or is it more of a concept?
  • All IceFallen dragons look to the IceWarden for guidance, however Her divinity is not always clear or available.
  • There is a system of authority in place among Gaoler: Sentinel Order Gaolers are considered closest to the IceWarden as guardians of Her pillar section, and should they come down from their lofty peaks to deliver Her Word then all obey. However, dragons of the Sentinel Order do not walk among their brothers and sister often enough to be considered leaders.
  • The Gaolers of the Overseer Order are more powerful and often more experienced, therefore the Keeper Order dragons look to them for answers.
  • The Sentry Order and Seeker Order Gaoler have Captains who give them their orders.
  • Among the Exalted, the White Witch Chroma communes with the IceWarden and shares Her wisdom with all of Her children. Chroma is respected for her power as a divine conduit and for her wisdom as an Exalted elder.

What values or traits are sought after? Does it vary from species to species? What will some do to achieve these aspects of themselves?
  • Innate magical abilities and a strong connection to the IceWarden is sought after in all dragons. These traits are developed at an early age and honed over a lifetime.
  • Strength of will is required to join the Order of Keepers or the Order of Overseers.
  • Speed and cunning are two traits that Seekers must have to join the Order.

Does your society have folk tales, mythology, traditional rituals? Where do they originate? Do they have any truth to them?
A cleansing ritual may be performed on someone who has been influenced by the Shade or other similar evils. This ritual is much like an exorcism; it draws out the evil with ancient Words of Power passed down from the Gods themselves. It is a dangerous task to perform for all parties involved and is not always successful. It is only performed by the Overseer council and a select few Exalted Mages.

What is considered a ‘nuclear’ family (basic social unit)? What is considered ‘extended’ family?
  • Overseers are territorial and remain alone for long periods of time. They rarely enjoy the company of others or take mates.
  • Keepers, like Overseers, do no often have the company of others, although they do crave it and take great pleasure in seeing their fellow Keepers. They mate with other Gaolers but rarely ever raise their own young. Cubs are never kept inside of the Penitentiary. If their sons and daughters choose to join the Order of Keepers, then their parent may insist on being a part of their initial training.
  • Sentries move in life-bonded pairs or packs of three that are often but not always romantic. They rarely ever see their cubs again after leaving them with the CubWarden and Exalted Caretakers.
  • Seekers move in packs of 5+ and care for one another like a family. They are primarily made up of female Gaoler who return to the Fortress once they have successfully captured or killed an assigned bounty. These are the only Gaoler of IceFallen that have been known to raise their own children in hopes that they may choose the Seeker Order as their own once they reach adulthood.

Are there any rights of passage or milestones that a generally accepted or striven for? Are there different standards for different genders or breeds?
Gaoler cubs must choose an Order to train into by the time that they reach adulthood or they are banished from the territory. Any indecision is considered weakness.

Are there any customs around death or the afterlife? Who preforms these? Is their life mourned, celebrated or something different?
Gaolers, like most dragons, live for centuries and centuries before their souls leave their earthly vessels to serve their deity. Natural death does not often occur. Death by combat versus a foe is more likely and is hailed as the most honorable way to perish. There is rarely a corpse to mourn over. Seeker and Sentry Orders that live out most of their lives outside of the Penitentiary have the highest mortality rate among Gaolers.
  • Seeker packs and Sentries will raise a Howl to commemorate the loss of a Sister (or Brother). This ritualistic mourning may last for hours under the light of the moon.
  • Sentries who have lost a life-bonded partner often become depressed and/or withdrawn and seek solitude inside of the Penitentiary as a Keeper or on rare occasions an Overseer.
  • Universally, if there is a corpse, it is burned to prevent Black Magic from raising the dead or utilizing its vessel in any way.

What, if any, foods are considered a delicacy? How is food prepared? Is there any forbidden or taboo foods?
  • Overseers are primarily vegetarian and avoid bringing the scent of blood into any proximity of the holding cells.
  • Keepers are primarily vegetarian, but occasionally Exalted dragons will bring meat to the Great Hall to celebrate holidays or special occasions.
  • Sentries and Seekers are both omnivorous, however, their diets consist mostly of meat as they are constantly moving and otherwise on the hunt.

What is considered courteous? How do you treat a guest to your home?
Silence is considered courteous within the Halls of the Fortress. Hushed speech is polite otherwise, and open speech is only appropriate in the Great Hall.

Outside of the fortress, respect is shown through loyalty and unconditional trust between Gaolers. Visitors to the territory are rare and even more rarely welcomed.

What is your societies ideas regarding unity, do they have ‘marriage’ or something similar? Do they stay partners for life? Are friendships exclusively platonic?
  • Keepers, should they ever mate, are not interested in life-bonded partnership due to the nature of their station. They care more for the fraternal bond shared within their Order for few outside of their station can truly understand them.
  • Sentry Order Gaolers are the only known members of IceFallen to take life-partners. This can be a monogamous relationship between two bonded partners or a polyamorous relationship between three or more. Once bonded, the Gaoler are rarely ever far apart from one another.
  • Seekers will occasionally take long-term mates, however, distance often strains these relationships if they are with Gaoler outside of their assigned pack. They are much more open to taking multiple partners over the course of a lifetime without commitment.
There are no formal ceremonies to bonding romantically.

Is there a system of education similar to ours? How do characters learn trade, skills, etc?
Exalted Caretakers often teach hatchlings and Gaoler cubs the basics (speech, reading, self defense, etc.). Most Gaolers are drawn to an Order, much like Guardian dragons and their Search. Their innate skills and instincts are honed on the job by example by their peers and elders.

Is everyone literate? Are there different languages or dialect? Are books freely available in libraries, or restricted?
  • Overseers & Keepers read and write often. It is a form of entertainment as much as it is necessary to document time passing. The library is open to any who may have interest in the world beyond their territory.
  • Sentry Order Gaolers can read and write in a basic short-hand that most orders and news come to them by Exalted Courier.
  • Seeker Order Gaolers are often illiterate and rely on word of mouth to communicate. Most alphas know the same short-hand that Sentry Order Gaolers do so that they might read incoming messages via Exalted courier. These messages do not come often due to the mobile nature of the Seeker pack.

Are there any standards for food, service or care? Who enforces this, if anyone?
Gaolers of IceFallen were only recently introduced to cooked foods by Exalted dragons. The Exalted have greatly improved their quality of life in many different areas, most notably their childcare. The Grey Knight Garviel and The White Witch Chroma are dragons with the authority to delegate tasks to other Exalted.

What do they use for currency? Is it a trade system? Why has this been specifically chosen?
There are rations and requisitions in place to divide resources fairly depending on rank and occupation. If an individual chooses to trade their supplies with another dragon it is a personal choice however frowned upon by more conservative, traditional Gaolers.

Are there any games played by the younger members of society? Nursery Rhymes?
The Cubwarden and her aides often hum to their charges to soothe them. The Cubwarden encourages play-fighting among cubs to test early development of innate skills and magic abilities. It is not unheard of that the Gaoler pups might wrestle with an Exalted dragon or with the Cubwarden to test their strength as they grow closer to choosing an Order.

Are there any specific genres of music originating in your lair? What does this involve?
Song is typically passed down orally and has only recently been transcribed onto paper or stone by the Exalted who wish to document the history and culture of the Gaolers. The Exalted have also introduced a plethora of new music to the Gaolers.
  • Overseers may rarely hum quietly to themselves, but song is reprehensible within the confines of their Ward.
  • Keepers sing merrily during Rest Periods in the Great Hall during feasts and celebrations.
  • The most musically versatile are the Sentries and Seekers who sing and howl songs of the Hunt among other things learned during their travels abroad.

Are there any restrictions on magic or spells? What and why? If not, does this cause any issues?
Those who develop magical abilities usually show signs at an early age. They are given special attention by their elders and peers and almost never fail to choose an Order due to the pressure put on them to do so. There are few restrictions on these abilities as they are seen as blessings and therefore have purpose. Among Gaolers there is unconditional trust in one another to use their strength and power to maintain control over the inmates held inside of the Fortress of Ends or to capture the Horrors still loose in the World.

How is defense handled? How is this enforced? Is there voluntary service or are they drafted?
Sentry Order Gaolers defend the perimeter of Ice Fallen Territory with day and night patrols. At this time there are two Sentry packs, the Dawnguard and the Night Heralds. Each pack is led by a Sentry Captain, also known as a Sentry Alpha, and the choice to join the Sentry Order is driven by divine purpose and individual choice.

How is apparel treated? Does certain apparel indicate a rank, class or job?
Exalted dragons brought the concept of accessorizing into the Territory, however most Gaolers refrain from it much like they refrain from taking on other personal possessions. In turn, The Exalted have begun to wear less apparel within the Fortress and only as needed outside of it to defend themselves against the elements or enemies.

Is there any opposition or conflict from outside sources? How does this affect your group? Do they take a pacifist or militarism approach?
Whether the threat may come from within should one of the prisoners escape, or from an outside source, the dragons of IceFallen are always prepared for battle. Few dragons from other Flights are well received, and at best, tolerated within the territory given the gravity of its holy purpose.

Does your lair participate in trade or shipping? With who? How do they do this?
IceFallen Gaolers have come to rely on the Exalted dragons for luxury resources they did not have access to from other Flights in the past. (Books, metals, cloth, etc.) There are no exports beyond shared knowledge.

Are there any common domesticated animals used as livestock, labor or transport? How did this happen? Are they common place?
The Exalted are often in charge of supplying the Clan with essential resources such as food. The Southern Icefield is one of the harshest territories in Sornieth, and yields very little meat on the hunt naturally so some of the Exalted dragons tend small herds of livestock to supply the clan with necessary protein.

Fishing often yields more success, but the Gaolers (to notable surprise) cannot stomach seafood.

Another source of resources for particularly harsh winters is a large underground larder of dried or frozen vegetation, and the Inner Sanctum, an Exalted made and tended greenhouse where fresh produce can be reliably grown and harvested.

Are symbols a significant aspect of life? If they are, what are symbols, what do they mean? Are certain symbols worn?
The symbol of the Ice Flight is the oldest and most revered symbol to IceFallen dragons followed by the Emblems of the Orders. These are the most commonly known symbols to the clan. They are carved into the stone walls of the Great Hall with the names of those who have joined those orders beneath.

With the introduction of the Exalted dragons, other symbols became significant such as the silver flowers which became a more common motif for the Exalted.

How much social mobility is there? Is it easy to move between the classes? How would one go about it?
Most Gaoler remain in their Order for life once chosen, but there are exceptions:
  • Overseers may move on from their duties to become part of the Sentinel Order if called upon by the IceWarden.
  • Keeper Order Gaolers may aspire to become Overseers, although this type of movement in rank is rare for most Greater Horrors are guarded by their appointed Overseers and Overseers do not often perish or leave their posts for any other reason.
  • Seekers never wish to return to the confines of the Fortress and the only change of Order for them may be to join the Sentry Order or go rogue. These deserters are often hunted down, questioned, and then executed.
  • Exalted dragons typically serve their given positions for life, however some many choose to serve other purposes as they are guided by the Mother's divinity to do so.

Is there any flora or fauna specific to your lair? How does the ecosystem work?
Very little grows within the Fortress and vermin are not tolerated within the confines of the Penitentiary. The Silver Flowers began to grow around the territory when the Exalted first came to settle among the Gaolers of IceFallen. The flowers are often used as decoration or dried to make herbal tea with calming properties.

About: The Frigid Penitentiary is a jagged black tooth of rock that juts out from among spires of impenetrable ice. The peak of this mountainous formation is obscured by ominous clouds. It is the home of the IceFallen; a sect of dragons who serve the IceWarden, guarding ancient evils of this land and beyond that are imprisoned below.

An enormous stone door bars anyone from entering or exiting the fortress. Carved into the stone is the tale of the founding of IceFallen: a horrific creature wreathed in flame dives from the sky towards three Gaoler Ancients that circle below. They battle ferociously and triumph over the beast, imprisoning it deep within the mountain fortress.

Common travelers do not often reach the fortress doors. One would have had to come with certain purpose to this place in order to pass the Sentry perimeter and obtain council with the Wardens of this place. Every creature who passes through the stone door is closely watched by its guardians. There are also those wicked creatures that are brought here to be locked away beneath rock and ice, never to see the light of day again.

Some rare few Ice dragons may hear the IceWarden call them to service at this place. These dragons are known as the Exalted and are marked with Her sign that grants safe passage here. These children of ice are met with solemn respect for their sacrifice of worldly comforts and selfish ambitions to serve a higher purpose.

This is no place for the weak of heart or the feeble of mind.
