Mantis is exceedingly bright, even for a coatl. He has a personality to match, always too loud and too energetic. He's widely regarded as a nuisance among the nobility, but he's close friends with Comet, who has a similar disposition. In time, he became close with Astra as well, a travelling wildclaw whose radar for trouble led her to a dead end in Polareis' lair. Listening to her tall tales, and then acting them out along side her, he found himself in love.

This feeling of affection begins to waver when he saw her more violent side in action. Watching her tear across the battlefield that was until recently his home, Mantis was both distraught and in awe. He remained frozen for the duration of that conflict, but when they arrived at their new home, he was eager to learn the ways of war from her.

Refusing to disclose his motivations, Mantis proves to be an enthusiastic fighter- if not a particularly skilled one. Meanwhile, his mate participates in an experiment with Magisa. She is interested in cloning, having exhausted her train of thought with homunculi. Astra doesn't talk about the experiments for the first couple months, and once Mantis starts to think nothing will come of it, something does.

Or someone, rather. Hazard is somehow even more brightly colored than her originator, and her strangely tinted memories from Astra's past fascinate Mantis immediately. When Magisa tires of observing her, she ends up moving into Mantis and Astra's shared denspace. And while Mantis loves both of them, of course, ultimately Hazard's uncanny habits win him over. Astra isn't sure whether to be insulted or amused at first, but lands on the latter in the end, resigning herself to being the aunt of his future nests, rather than their mother.
