Biography
"You came here alone?! Yes I see the pet you know what I mean!"
"Well, thank the gods you got here in one piece, at least. Basic knowledge of self defense is important... contrary to popular belief... so I'm glad you've taken the time to sharpen yours. Seems like you learned a thing or two from the last time you were in the Snowsquall Tundra."
"Mm... how was the trip through our territory, by the way? Anything I should be aware of? I know we've hit that time of year when the hoarfrost maulers start waking from hibernation. Hopefully we can prepare for their inevitable nonsense ahead of time."
Along with Nightblood and Foeslayer, Blink serves as a steadfast protector of Vulstalridge's dragons as well as the forest they call home. An artful fighter and capable tactician, he brings a much appreciated skillset to the team that has proven useful time and again.
... Sometimes appreciated, Blink would tell you. Mostly, if you really wanted to be generous. In truth, the wildclaw is a tad more level-headed than his aforementioned companions and he is painfully aware of it. The matriarch and her son, as brave as they are, are also hopelessly ruled by their impulsive brawl-ready attitudes. Blink will often have to switch from carefully assessing the enemy to cutting himself short and urging the two to not do the thing yet, oh gods can you please just give me a minute with all due respect, Nightblood, WAIT--
Other times they'll already be throwing metaphorical hands before he could even get started on the strategizing and he's forced to make up a scheme on the fly (literally, depending on the occasion.) It's an exasperating position for the poor wildclaw to be in.
That being said, the two are more thankful for him than he realizes. Foeslayer is grateful for the times that his brother-in-arms has reminded him to think before he acts. Nightblood would tell you that Blink's insight has saved them plenty of trouble over the years; that he helps them see reason where they otherwise may forget, and this is why she values him as a battle partner. When she does choose to take action, it is because she deemed the situation as one that couldn't wait. She may not always agree with the wildclaw's thinking, but she understands the importance of having more than one tune of voice in one's ear.
And really-- Blink wouldn't be here if he didn't know that, deep down. He likes what he does and he takes pride in his work, as well as the formiddable team that he and the other two make when they charge onto the field side by side.
Blink's story is a straightforward one of little substance. His mother was an Ice Flight ambassador who had been assigned to the Scarred Wasteland to represent her people there. She grew acquainted with the plague dragons and eventually fell for one, resulting in a single egg.
Marital problems only arose once Blink hatched. His mother was still unused to plague-based hatchling rearing and freaked out as soon as her mate started discussing which strains would be safe to infect their son with. She called it weird, he called it strengthening the child's immunity, and after an explosive argument, Blink's mother snuck away with him back to the Icefields.
This naturally caused a bit of a tiff between the two flights' officials and diplomats. The Ice Flight's order chose to allow her to keep the child, but relinquished her of her position to say they'd dealt at least some kind of discipline. Blink's mother accepted this decision and raised her son in content solitude, choosing a home in the Frigid Floes.
Being an older dragon, she died peacefully of natural causes shortly after Blink reached adulthood. He would continue to live as a clan-less rogue until the day he met Fayre... alas, a story which will have to be saved for another time.
Extra Facts
- Blink's father wasn't a bad person! In a place like the Wasteland, Baby's First Viruses™ is a perfectly reasonable thing to start considering. At the end of the day the real bad guy was culture shock and a lack of serious communication before the nest-making.
- Blink's default familiar is a dunewind manticore named Chrom who is a great fighter and an absolute cinnamon roll but kind of an airhead. Yes, he causes just as much grief as Nightblood and Foeslayer do to his owner.
- Blink's mother was a coatl, so he was also personally taught and raised with draconic sign language. However, he can also understand coatl-speak rather well and even "say" a few of their words, if a little poorly.
