Arke is the clan's Overseer - among the first to meet newcomers to the clan, and the dragon who delegates all duties within the clan. Arke, notably, is lacking a pearl.

She suffers from a curse that plagues many in the clan: her hide is wrapped in thorns growing into and out of her skin. The pain in her joints was blinding. Crippling. She couldn't understand how the Umbra-Mother could function. How anyone afflicted could function.

Word reached her of a ghastly, hungry being that could grant a wish, in exchange for a Pearlcatcher's most precious possession. She devoted endless hours to research of it, and when a feather came to her in a daze, she obliged.

Arke offered up her pearl with a wish in a hazy, sunset-lit cathedral, and the Ravenghast answered in kind. In the end, she was left somewhere on the outskirts of the territory, pearlless, and unable to remember her own name.

She was found by the beloved she had also forgotten, Herja, who took her back to the lair and the founders. Little by little, they're all working together to rebuild her memories. Arke only does what she does now because that's what is expected of her, but she doesn't seem to mind.

The first time Arke returned Herja's loving embrace since her pact, they found her new gift, in an instant Arke's vines gripping Herja in an iron-tight hold, some even making a new home on her wings; in an instant Arke felt the euphoria of a life without pain, and Herja felt the agony of a life with pain.
