Biography

Mourning
Isle's Twin
Chaotic Neutral

(Mourning wants you to know that she's ashamed of her brother and his bio entirely filled with lies.)

As she's Clan _______'s premier biologist, most dragons would expect to find Mourning hidden away in a lab somewhere, working on some sort of experiment. That is true, but they often have trouble recognizing it as a place of study. With its metal walls and barricades, and it being covered in scorch marks from fires and explosions, it looks more like a miniature fortress than a lab.

That fortress has taken quite a few beatings for a stronghold that only has to deal with one attacker. Though, as Mourning would reluctantly admit, it is quite the exceptional attacker. Her twin would have to be somewhat exceptional as a consequence of sharing the same genes, of course, though she's clearly more exceptional in every way. After all, Mourning wouldn't be so cowardly as to launch projectiles and sling spells while hiding in the distance. To be fair, she can't prove it's Isle, but why does she need proof? Only he'd stoop so low as sabotage, using those heat-sensing eyes of his to know exactly where Mourning is and thus how to avoid his well-deserved retribution.

Mourning can't believe that her brother would be so ungrateful. The two of them had originally been guardians, and had never known their parents. As she'd decided she was clearly the older one, Mourning took it upon herself to take care of her younger brother. Not that he was ever grateful for her care. Isle kept following her around, doing the same things she did, and then had the gall to complain she wouldn't leave him alone afterwards! There was no relief to be had from him; everything she did, he'd copy. She'd gained a position as a researcher in a promising clan, only to find Isle had copied that and become a scientist too. At this rate, they'd end up having the same charge, and then Mourning would never be rid of him. There was only one thing to do.

And that was DANGEROUS SCIENCE! From other arcane dragons, Mourning had heard of a mutagen that caused those infected by it to transform into an entirely different breed. Drastic measures, yes, but if she was no longer a guardian, there would be no way Isle could continue being her unwanted imitator. Fortunately, like most dangerous things in the Isles, there were dragons willing to provide Mourning with the mutagen, as long she'd agree to let them study her afterwards. There was only one problem. Isle had come up with the same idea. Mourning wasn't even surprised when both of them found themselves standing next to a cauldron of green sludge, with an excited spiral encouraging them to drink it so she could take notes on its effects. Luckily, the twins did have a few differences, and Mourning's more cautious brother hesitated to drink the concoction. That gave Mourning an opportunity to down the entire thing! Immediately, she began convulsing on the ground in victory and extreme pain.

It took a few days, but Mourning made a full recovery from that ordeal. After filling out a survey on her experience for the spiral (5/5, would drink again), she returned to the clan a new bogsneak. But during her absence, Isle had kept trying to copy her. While he might not have been brave enough to drink a mutagen, he had been willing to purchase a scroll that transformed him into a mirror. With her treasure even! He'd pay for that. He'd pay for being so ungrateful, for ignoring everything Mourning had done for him, and most of all for never giving her a moment to herself. She'd make sure of it.

Some biologists are happy to study living creatures. But not Mourning. She's only satisfied by mutating causing the sudden accelerated evolution of other creatures. Many dragons are satisfied with their current familiars, but Mourning knows they could be so much more. At the very least, Mourning thinks she should be allowed to make those companions both poisonous and venomous. Sure, the giving wings to everything experiments went poorly, but toxins are perfectly safe. Well, they're safe now that Mourning's figured out how to make animals immune to their own poisons.

Delving deeply into biology has taught Mourning the wonders of how dragon genes work. She's tried to put that knowledge to a singular use: proving that she's genetically superior to her brother in every way. But the results of her tests on her and Isle's scales (and blood, after bribing Sonja to go collect some) have failed her in every way. No, worse than that! She hasn't been able to find a single difference between her and her brother. (Beyond the obvious self-imposed species changes.) In fact, they're unnaturally identical. As fraternal twins, they should be quite different. But there's no differences whatsoever. Mourning has no idea what the implications of this are, but it worries her greatly.
