Biography

Eclipse outfit

Outfit by Phantasmagorica

Maybe:

Eclipse awoke with a start. Scrambling to her window, she tore down the blinds and frantically searched the street below. Were they out there? Her eyes scorned everything. Once she was sure she was safe, she retreated into the dark of the hotel room and let herself relax.

The Colonnades of Antiquity were a great place to hide - crowded, confusing and full of tourists. No one would find her here. They would hardly know she was even in Dragonhome, let alone which cheap hotel she hid in. She was simply being paranoid, that's all.

Then a knock came on the door. A single knock.

Maybe she imagined it? Probably not. Two knocks followed soon after.

She couldn't breathe. A quick four knocks receded them. It couldn't be...

The dragon outside grew tired and kicked down the door. How could she had ever thought she was safe? The door - her barrier to the outside world - broken so easily. Her legs felt weak. She should have known there was no escape.

The dragon in the doorway appeared from out of a nightmare. Scales polished so shiny; Eclipse could see her own panicked face in them. They didn't look real - as if made from a machine rather than an egg. Too methodical and large and strong to be her equal; too perfectly carved and perfectly shaped. She was simply no match for the Ridgeback before her.

“I’ll admit – you’re a hard dragon to find. But you should have known we’d find you eventually,” Their voice was rough, deep and hollow. It was impossible to see their expression underneath the hood, but they sounded bored.

“Wait, what about the other Sisters? What’s Madame’s plan for them?” She cried, though instantly she knew the answer. Images of her comrades’ lifeless bodies flashed through her mind.

The dragon didn’t respond and rushed forward. Their eyes glinted underneath the fabric, fixated on her neck.

“Wait! No! Please!” Her voice was shaky and desperate. What a way to go. She had always figured that when it was her time, she would fight with tooth and claw to take others down with her. Now, she found herself scrambling away from her killer’s claws.

The last few moments were a blur. The Ridgeback moved perfectly, carrying out a routine they had done a thousand times before. She struck out blindly at the figure, but they dodged all too easily. She swiped again, but her claws caught air. Then, a gasp.

A garish metal blade buried into her soft stomach, staining her fur a sickening red. Toppling over. Clawing feebly at the ground. All the world seemed incomprehensible – foreign sounds and smells hidden under a thousand layers of agony. Then, again. The sword slowly withdrew before stabbing into her guts once more. Blood spluttered its way up her throat. Staring at her killer. Their eyes so cold. Was this the end? A guttural cry emerged from her jaws as the weapon left for the final time. Her own self dripping off the tip of the rapier, and onto the frigid floor. And then, end.

The feeling that came after was even worse than her actual death. She was forcefully dragged back to life over what felt like a bed of glass. She was too weak to struggle though, she could only reflect on her misery. When she woke up, it didn’t feel real. She laid there, in the dark, for so long. Waiting, waiting for death to realize that she had slipped through, and to come and claim her life. Eventually, she had to accept she was truly alive.

She scrambled to her feet, finding herself dumped next to sacks of waste in an alleyway. It appeared to be the evening. Wait, no. Early morning, before the sun had rose. That meant she had been dead for nearly a whole day at least. She tried to take a few steps forward, but immediately felt weak. She glanced down, saw her blood-drenched belly, and remembered her brutal death. Shaking like a leaf, her sides heaved and she threw up until everything in her stomach was gone. So much for a powerful warrior, getting ill at the sight of her own blood.

“There is no need to be hard on yourself,” A voice boomed from behind her. Looming over her was the goddess diana, presenting herself in the form of a young male imperial. Her eyes like that of a goat – her sacred animal – stared into Eclipse’s soul. Her voice rang out again, “It was your first time dying, in the future your revival will be quicker, and you will get used to the feeling.”

The Tundra’s eyes widened, speechless until she realized the god was awaiting her response, “I don’t understand, how am I not dead?”

The deity blinked, before explaining, “I have given you the highest honour I can bestow among my followers: immortality. Part of my godly essence is now within you, granting you immunity to death. Sister Eclipse, you cannot die.”

“I…” She stammered, unsure how to respond, “But… the scriptures never spoke of such an ability!”

“Indeed. It is a power I gift only in dire circumstances, and I have not needed to do so for millennia. However, our cult is nearly extinct. Most members are dead or in hiding. I believe you have shown yourself to be a worthy follower, and I trust you to revive our cause.”

“This is just… too much,” She rubbed her head, trying to take in everything, “I mean, where do I even start?”

“There is another dragon who has escaped the clutches of death,” Eclipse tilts her head, confused as to how this is possible. The god responds, “They weren’t granted such abilities by me. There are… other methods of gaining immortality, let’s say. Regardless, I wish you to find this dragon and gain their trust. They will be important for the future of the Sisterhood.”

“I still don’t get what I’m supposed to do, I mean, what if I fail?” The Tundra was clearly distressed, running her claws through her mane.

“You will not fail, have more faith in yourself Sister Eclipse. Your first step is to go to the Hellwell Undercroft, you will find information there. Remember: I trust you can do this,” The goddess bowed her head swiftly, a respectful dismissal. With that, she disappeared in a bright flash of light.

“Alright, Eclipse,” She spoke to herself, “You’re immortal, all your friends are dead or missing, your God trusts you with the most important job of the millennia, and you have to find a group of dragons who you don’t know or everything you have worked for will be meaningless.”
She sighs and lets herself have five minutes to cry. To grieve the deaths of her comrades and herself. To reconcile the fact she cannot die. To realise how tough her journey ahead will be. Then, she pulls herself up, dries her tears, and wanders into main street. She can’t allow her sadness to distract from her goal.

It’s oddly quiet, at this time; all of the merchants are yet to have set up their stalls. Is she scared? Yes. Does she know what to expect? No. But she knows diana will watch out for her, and now she has a clear goal. It’s odd – it seems the day she died was the best and worst of her life.
