Biography

nagisa kawagishi.
↠ daimyo of sanariku, last of the kawagishi clan.

He puts the flowers down and lifts a flask from his belt, pouring fresh sea water atop the grave site. It trickles down the sides slowly, lifting the smell of sun-warmed dust and salt. He stays there for a time, until one of the attendants comes to him and commends him for his diligence in visiting his family's ceremonial graves so often. "Yes," he murmurs, "I thank you. Now, I must go. My duties await."

Alongside the royal family Tenkubashi, the ancient ruling lineage of Kasaiwari born of the first union between yokai and dragon, was the cadet branch of Kawagishi. Where the Tenkubashi have always been the bridge, Kawagishi has been the blade. For centuries the Kawagishi would prove themselves as steadfast and loyal, most going into the Tenshi, the spiritual warrior sect that protect Kasaiwari from rogue yokai. Nagisa was born as the youngest of five children, the son of the current Shogun, the head of all Tenshi chapters.

It was expected that, eventually, he would join his father. But he was also the baby of the family, and allowed to take his time on that path. Whilst his family did nudge him into upholding their high standards, being the epitome of grace and civility, he was a bit of a goof as a young boy. He enjoyed his studies, but also enjoyed trying to talk to spirits, and really enjoyed hanging out in Tenkubashi palace.

Where his childhood and young adulthood were marked by his closeness to his family, tragedy would strike like thunder. When the War of Spirits started, Nagisa was left alone in Sanariku whilst the rest of his family went out across the rest of the provinces to reinforce their defences. Whilst worried, he buckled down to help run the province. For years his family would come and go and Nagisa would grow up in the process. On one of their returns, there would be a surprise attack unlike any other.

It was not the usual incursion of yokai. It was one of the dai-yokai, one of the nine strongest in the entire realm, the dai-kitsune Tsume. And accompanying him was a massive qirin, towering over the powerful kitsune with an aura of power palpable to anyone. They were under attack by Shikitsuhikotamatemi, the Yokai God King. And Shiki had no sympathy for the Kawagishi, the old blade held against the yokai's throat for too long.

Nagisa fought. His entire family fought. But it was pointless. Not even the Shogun could stand up to him. Shiki and Tsume decimated the entire Tenshi chapter, all of the militia, the entire Kawagishi family. Nagisa was the only survivor of the battle, and that was by their choice. Shiki removed one of his arms with a sneer, leaving him to either bleed to death or forever remember his failures, and remember the bloody deaths of all of his beloved.

As you'd imagine, he was not the same after. The War would draw to a close not long after, with Shiki disappearing and Tsume being killed, his pelt brought to Nagisa as a gift. The entire landscape had shifted. Many notable clans had been destroyed, families broken, and allegiances shifted. Nagisa, as the sole Kawagishi, remained loyal to the Tenkubashi. The final blade to protect the bridge.

Gone is the joy and the laughter. What remains is a far closer picture to his father. Nagisa is a very reserved individual, full of grace and civility. Whilst in his heart there is much love for his province and his people, he is a very hard man to read. He runs Sanariku as it's Daimyo, he does so with calculation. Prone to keeping to himself, he enjoys taking tea and helping keep the sprawling cemetery clean. His skills as a herbalist and swordsman far, far exceed expectations. He does have many people who care deeply for him, whose presences he enjoys very much, there is a well of sadness and silence that is hard to breach.

What does bring him joy is his son, Tsuru. Tsuru is, perhaps, the only reason he continues on when the loneliness threatens to swallow him. The two are very close, and Nagisa is not an uncommon sight around Himikoro when the time allows it. Whilst he has led Sanariku for several decades now, an idea has been forming in his mind as of late. As the scales fall from his eyes, the grief finally leaves enough room for other thoughts. Behind the scenes, he begins to plan a shift: picking up his sword once again to restart Sanariku's Tenshi chapter, and finding someone else to replace him as Daimyo.
