By the time Acra had grown from hatchling to adolescent, the shade had already rooted itself deep into the guardian's being. Like a slow ache, the darkness ate away at the dragon. But rather than dying and being resurrected as a shade wraith, Acra's soul and body faded.
Some day's the shade's presence is thick and cloying, other day's you might be able to hold a conversation with the soul one would presume is Acra.
And then other days entirely, the guardian is barely visible, drifting as if an actual spirit.
