Biography
once a King, he was broken, his spirit crushed under his Queen's cruel intentions and the war she tricked him into waging on an innocent kingdom...
once a man, he was drowned, his mind breaking under the weight of his failure and the reality of the atrocities he'd committed against a land of Giants...
once a Hollow, he was restored, his body dredged from the depths of his own mental abyss and filled with new purpose in service to a greater hope.
Once.
Drowned Spirits
Water dragons cross the seas and rivers daily, paying little heed to most currents and rocks they pass. They fear nothing if they fall in; they breathe water as all others breath air. The journeys are normal for them, often seen as uneventful. For all other Flights, however, such crossings are treacherous, even deadly. Only a few minutes beneath the surface and it's over. The depths have claimed millions, and claim more each day.
Therein lies the source of the Drowned Spirits phenomenon. A peculiar class of undead, they are dragons who's last moments were in the embrace of the water, their final breaths of water instead of air. The very element that slew them gave them new life. Their bodies are as if made of the dark waters, rippling and shifting, semi-translucent. Bones shine through, looking as though seen from below the surface of the waves. Their former elements forgotten, Water is the element that courses through them.
Not all drowned become these, and it is unclear what circumstances must occur for the reanimation to take place. Some attribute it to practical concepts such as excess magic in the area. Others say it is unfinished business. Some even say there is a certain class of necromancers that reanimate these ghosts. Whatever the case, these mysterious shades wander many bodies of water.
Some remember their lives more than others. A few individuals return to their former homes, interacting with old friends and family much the same as before. Most only recall fragments, bits of memories of what it was like before they were reformed beneath the waves... and still others remember nothing.
These souls wander, searching for purpose in this new existence. Some join lairs, and attempt to make themselves a normal semi-life. Others gather together, mysterious flocks of glowing bones in the night. And then there are some, lonely and lost for too long, who drag unsuspecting passerby to a watery grave, hoping for company in the ghost yards of the sea...
