Rajani doesn’t sleep much. This night is no different from the others; the dreams wake her, and she wriggles out from Isangild's embrace, careful not to wake her companion. The door to the balcony is already cracked open, and she inches out into the fresh night air. “Yes, just like that! You’re a natural. Where did you say -" The sky is overcast, stars hidden away, and the clouds capture the faint orange glow of lamplight instead. A hush covers the town. It’s still a novel thing, to associate silence with safety. Amongst the jungles of the Labyrinth and the trenches of the Wasteland, the quiet meant death, dangers unseen and unheard. “I don’t understand. How can you be -” She doesn’t know how long she stays like that, looking out over the town as the fog rolls in. It’s soothing. She may not sleep much, but she can rest, like this, revelling in the peace she’s found. “The nerve of you, to come back here, after betraying us like this!" |

Clouds still hang low over the sky, but she can see them lightening on the horizon, the sun rising far beyond their reach. There’s a thud, and a curse. Isangild clambers onto the balcony a moment later, feathers sleep-mussed and sticking out every which way. “How long have you been out here?” “After everything you’ve seen -" Rajani’s wings ache, phantom pains on wounds long scarred over. She stretches the useless limbs, letting the membrane catch the ever-present breeze. “We were your family!” “Just a while,” she says, brushing her tail against Isangild's flank. “You should go back to bed.” “You should come with me.” Isangild's eyes are still heavy with sleep, but the look she gives Rajani is piercing. There’s no hiding here. Her past might find her at night, but it has no hold in the light of day, not next to this. “Let’s go, then.” |
