Askan The Survivalist

Despite Ash's apparent goodnature, you can't help but breath a sigh of relief as you exit the darkest part if the lair, slipping into more well trodden pathways. However, it becomes evident that the "large and dangerous looking guardian" is a common dragon in the clan, as you turn a corner and quite literally run into yet another one. This one is near monotone brown, dusty cloth covering his hide and a fearsome look on his face. He coughs a few times, then dips his head. "Apologies," His voice is rough but sincere, "I am Askan, were you looking for me or just happen to find me?" |

Origins
| Askan hails from the dangerous region of the Scarred Wasteland, which is what forced him to become a survivalist in the first place. The Plaguebringer's domain is a well known danger zone, and only those with the strongest minds and bodies can survive indefinitely. Askan is not one of those. In the beginning, Askan lived happily; his mother and father were kind dragons, Gideon teaching him to survive with a patience he was never shown by his father. However, nothing lasts forever and Askan soon fell victim to the contagion that surrounded their home. Through no fault of his own, Askan was caught in a cloud of vile gas that burned his lung so badly, he hacked up the bloody lining. He stumbled home, still wheezing and coughing blood, collapsing into the lair where his parents were. Gideon and Belladonna reacted quickly, doing their best to heal and comfort their son, speaking with the clan's healer in hopes of finding a solution. When Askan grew weaker by the day, they knew he had to leave if he were to live. Hoping the dry air would help his breathing, Askan was sent to the Shifting Expanse to reside with the Galestorm Flyers. There, Serasorth managed to mitigate the illness, as he had experience with chronic breathing problems through Nylite's illness. Slowly, Askan began to recover, and by the time Nantis offered him a role as the lead survivalist, he could almost function normally. He still struggled to breath and coughed frequently, though he never let that stop him from teaching his clanmates valuable survival skills. Interestingly, Askan never had the urge of a Search, instead finding the Flyers and claiming his Charge before it began. No one knows for sure what his charge is, but theories include: the entire clan, the weak, Shivani, and the spiders on his cobwebs. |

Personality
Despite apperances, Askan is actually a well mannered and kind hearted dragon, only bringing out the rough and tumble side of him when he needs to take on the survivalist persona. Most days, Askan will drift through the lair aimlessly--he doesn't have a room of his own by his request--and stop to chat with his clanmates. When he is too tired to do that, Askan will hang out with Shivani and have wonderfully philosophical conversations with the botanist, though he insists he is not a philosophical dragon. Most interactions with his clanmates are surface level but polite; he is not quick to anger and takes the time to think before assigning blame for mistakes. When he is teaching others how to survive, Askan keeps a steady presence of reassurance and patience, wanting to mimic his father's style of teaching as he found it to be beneficial for him. He will explain things as many times as needed and ensures he always provides positive feedback along with the negative. That being said, Askan is not exempt from fits of anger; when others are impulsive or violent without need, or sometimes take what they have for granted, Askan can get quite furious and has been known to snap. His fury is not a loud one, but rather quiet and seething, more likely to cause your downfall in the shadows rather than by fire and explosions. This reactivity is what gave Askan his "survivalist persona", which he pulls out when he needs to actually survive on his own or is in a harrowing situation. Then, he will drop all manners and stick to the bare bones, his sentences become short and frank, he is quicker to anger and reacts with more expression, and he abandons any sort of small talk. However, often Askan will apologize for his actions after things calm down--he never wants to truly hurt anyone else with his words.
