“I’ve named you for what I hope you always have, little love,” his mother once told him.

Trust was well grown before he truly realized that his life was extraordinary in a multitude of small ways. He was the eldest living son of his clan’s leader. Perhaps in another clan that might be a position of power, but in the Hiraeden it was barely worth mentioning. He would inherit no title from his father. The clan would simply choose who they wanted to lead them when Steam relinquished his title. And anyway, it always seemed to Trust that his father’s chief duties were simply organizing votes anyway. Steam issuing an order was a rare enough occurrence that it would end up the subject of gossip for weeks afterward.

And then there was his parents’ relationship. They had never shown any particular strength of affection for one another, and yet neither had taken any other mate since they had known each other. No one he had grown up with had ever treated this as unusual, so the comments he had heard from traveling traders about the Hiraeden being “weird free love types” had been initially quite baffling. He’d ended up asking Moth about it, since in Trust’s mind Moth was the most worldly and well traveled member of the clan, except for maybe Kor. But Kor was short tempered while Moth had always been patient with him. The memory of the conversation that followed still brought with it the heat of embarrassment.

But the most extraordinary part of his life didn’t really become apparent to him until he traveled as a young adult. Everyone in the Hiraeden made kindness their highest virtue, even grouchy Kor and their vain goddesses. He hadn’t been able to notice it as a child because he had never known anything different. But his first trips outside the Hiraeden made him certain that the strange little clan his father had built in the back end of nowhere was special. He wouldn’t inherit it, but then it wasn’t something that could be inherited. Still he would dedicate himself to keeping it safe, and preserving it's customs.
