    Edge had been told not to swim in the large underground lake that lay in the chamber deepest below their lair. Still the water had shimmered so invitingly. She jumped in.

    The cold stole the breath from her lungs and it had been a struggle to make it back to the shore. She gasped for air then gasped again as the shimmering patterns from the lake refused to leave her fur.

    She had sobbed when she confessed to her mother both from guilt at having done the forbidden and fear at the strange new markings. Her mother had been unfazed.

    “Magic’s like that sometimes. It called you. Only I hope you manage something other than being a bog hag like me. You couldn’t intimidate a fieldmouse, sweet fluff.” Looking at the currently discarded regalia of Dagger’s position lumped in a corner, Edge couldn’t help but agree. The mask and tattered cloth were unnerving when they weren’t filled with her mother’s comforting shape.

    But it had begun a lifelong curiosity about the lake. She wanted to know how it had granted her power and what sort of power it was. She could happily spend a lifetime studying it.
