Thread curled around her egg. She had been a little disappointed at first to see that there had only been the one. She cursed herself for not waiting until she was stronger, healthier. But she had been anxious to put her old life behind her. She’d dreamed of motherhood for so long.

“Sometimes there’s only one egg,” Steam had said with his gentle placidity when she had voiced her doubts to him. Thread half wondered if he was even capable of raising his voice. She had never seen him be anything other than soft and kind. It was what had convinced her to stay here when she had only meant to seek a single night’s shelter in their lair. She wondered if that softness was something he could pass on to their egg. She hoped so. Far better their child take after him than her own neurosises.

“When was the last time you ate?”

Thread startled. She hadn’t heard Amaharra come in.

“I’m fine.” She shifted to sit up and tried to hide the wave of dizziness that had come with the movement.

“That doesn’t answer my question.” Amaharra frowned at her, then from somewhere within the folds of her sash she produced a handful of snacks. “Eat.”

Thread opened her mouth to protest, but was cut off.

“Humor me.” Amaharra waited until Thread had taken several bites before continuing. “Have you thought about what you want to do once the egg hatches?”

Thread flinched a little. There seemed to be few rules that governed this clan, but one of the biggest unspoken ones was that everyone did something to contribute. They had been patient with Thread being terrified to leave her egg, but that wouldn’t last forever.

“Because I could use a hand with the hatchlings. This clan is growing fast. Astria and I can manage now but...” she gestured at the other nests in the cavern. There were a number of eggs that would hatch soon, including two of Amaharra’s.

“I... I have no experience. I barely know what I’m doing with the egg.” Thread couldn’t quite trust the offer being made. It wasn’t that she thought Amaharra would lie, but it was too sweet.

“You’ll learn. Even just an extra set of eyes would be good some days.”

“I only have one eye.” Thread touched the scar tissue on her face self-consciously.

“That was an ill chosen figure of speech. I apologize.” Amaharra said after a pause. “But really, I won’t leave you alone with the unruly pack of them until you feel comfortable, and is there really any other work you’d rather do?” Thread finally met her gaze and was taken aback by the intensity of it. And yet there was no judgement, only curiosity.

She swallowed hard. There were a number of things she knew she was good at. And she hated them enough to have left her whole life behind without knowing where she would end up. Motherhood had seemed like a pipe dream then. But now? She looked at her egg then up at Amaharra.

    “I’d be honored to.”
