Ambroise

Ambroise kept to the same path when she scavenged. Somehow, every week or so, new scrap appeared along the trail, and she didn't want to question her good fate, and thus didn't investigate. One mysterious day, a large chunk of scrap appeared in the middle of her path, and in her attempt to circumvent it, she wandered off the trail. She was lost. She was afraid.

And for the first time in her life, she felt something besides the oppresive light she had always known shine on her face.

Well, to be more accurate, she first felt a tree to the face.
You see, the light of her home, while needed for tree growth, was somehow too bright, too strong for any sapling to survive. So on her very first foray into the land of shade- which had been next to her her entire life, if only she could have seen it- involved walking directly into a silent tree.
