Kaede’s been away from the clan for seven days when she finds the valley. She didn’t mean to travel so far, not without letting someone know first. But there’s been a restlessness in her paws since the fire, an unpleasant itch beneath her skin when she lingers too long at the springs. She tries not to dwell on the guilt she feels, knows it’s irrational, but a part of her wonders still if guiding her clan to their new home will make up for leading them from the old. The sun sits low in the east. Long shadows are cast over the valley, but the dark looks cool and refreshing as another summer day looms. To the north, she can make out a waterfall tripping down the hills, no doubt the source of the river that snakes its way south, splitting at one point only to join again farther down. The vale is flush with bamboo. And at the heart of it all stands a Singing Shrine. |

Tucking her wings in close, Kaede picks her way down the hillside, steady and surefooted. Her heart is pounding. With an expert eye, she notes that the bamboo and other flora seem to be in good health, which bodes well for the soil quality. If this is it – if she’s found it – Water gurgles as she nears the river, a pleasant background noise underpinning the birdsong. Fishscales glimmer beneath the surface. She makes it to the opposite shore with a well-timed leap and a gust of wind, picking up speed as she nears the shrine. The temple itself looks to be in excellent condition, if a bit neglected. The ancient doors are shuttered tight, cobwebs stretching all the way from the veranda. Far above her head, the chime of the shrine’s bells are just barely audible. It’s imperfect. It’s exactly what she’s been looking for. With a sudden burst of energy, she bounds forward and howls, “For the Dawn Breeze!” It is the first time the clan’s cry is heard here. It will not be the last. |
