In the Beginning, he did not understand. What was the purpose of his existence? His companion assured him that he had no purpose, that life itself had no purpose other than merely being. He was simply meant to be, She told him, and he accepted that with minimal arguments.

His companion was always present. There was never a moment in his life without Her, and he couldn't imagine existing alone. He first opened his eyes to see Hers, a bright gold against the black of the Void, and from then on, he was always under Her gentle gaze, assuring him that he will never be alone.

Together, they observed the progression of the Universe. They watched the stars explode into being, the planets condense and sustain life, atoms come together and create organic cells and systems and beings. Those beings, on those tiny planets, would have songs and dance and beauty, and they would have wars and cruelty and death, and the two of them watched.

In the Beginning, She went to see their counterparts that existed in distant areas of the Void. She would go without him, and he was left to wait, wondering why he was left behind at all. When She returned, he refused to look away lest She disappear again. She indulged him, letting him hover around Her as he worried.

With time, that fear would slowly fade as he realizes that She is always there, always in the corner of his eye, even if no one else could see Her. He meets the others, and they ask if he had seen Her again after that initial meeting, and he realizes that they expect him to say no, as if She isn't lingering over his shoulder. He lies. She smiles approvingly.

The two of them watch on, away from the others. He asks if She has a purpose, and She smiles. To keep him company, She answers. He nods. The others are lonely, he knows, despite having each other. But he has Her. He will never be alone, not like them. He will never yearn for Her touch, the feeling of fire and warmth. He will never be desperate for even a glimpse of Her, staring at every star and comparing them to Her. No, he is fortunate. He can turn around and see bright gold watching him, always with him, and know that he will never be Alone.
