Belladonna's life as a hatchling was a dull one. Her clan eked out an existence growing withered fruit from the dry, cracked earth of the Shifting Expanse. The only excitement in her early life of back-breaking work was the occasional raids of talonok. The spiral learned from a young age to recognize the near-silent sound of wingbeats, and where to bite to kill the creatures before they could escape with all their meager food.
But life could not go on that way forever. Belladonna never had any intentions of leaving her family behind--she was fiercely loyal from the moment she opened her eyes--but when the Shade came creeping across the land like a million deadly snakes, she had no other choice. Her last memory of her parents was of her father's crazed laughter, his eyes turned dark and bloodshot as he pinned her mother to rip out her throat. Her mother's dying screams, begging Belladonna to run to safety, have haunted the spiral's nightmares for the rest of her life.
She ran and flew, ran and flew until she reached the end of the world--or what seemed to be the end of the world, anyway. At the time, the Fletching Clan was nothing like it is now. Instead it was a mere few spires, dull and storm-battered, clinging to the cliffs across from the Starfall Isles. The clan had only a few members; a grieving patriarch, a desperate adviser, a mangled keeper for an empty hatchery, and a few starving strays like herself, seeking shelter where there was no choice else.
But Belladonna did not allow herself to fall into the haze of anxiety that seemed to cling to the whole gray territory. Beneath her quiet demeanor, something fierce pulsed. She began to hone her skills and found, quickly, that she was something she had never expected to be; an adept fighter.
Belladonna's spiral grace was accentuated by her absolute precision. She learned to dip and weave, a flash of black-and-white lightning on the battlefield, fluid and dangerous. At home in the Fletching Clan, she was beloved by the weak hatchlings and their mothers, who now relied on Belladonna as a hunter as well as a protector. While the spiral was gentle, soft-spoken, and smiled easily with the weak, she was a discerning judge of character, and the dragons who made attempts to take advantage of her new family found her blade-like claws at their throats without hesitation.
She is well-liked and respected for her work, but keeps only a few close friends. Whisper was the first dragon she protected with her life--the pearlcatcher who suffered so greatly she could barely speak, yet preyed upon by too many dragons because of her great beauty. Belladonna fought fiercely for her from the moment she sought refuge in the Fletching Clan. The three imperial brothers who had been near enough to controlling the clan simply by their size and power quickly found themselves limping away, wings in tatters and scales soaked with blood.
Finally, there was Jakam... While extremely close, Belladonna's relationship with him is a strained one. The other spiral does not take his duties as exalter lightly, and each set of trainees brought to him by Belladonna seems only to add to the tremendous weight on his thin shoulders. For some time, Belladonna was the only one who ever saw the tears in Jakam's eyes when he erased the other dragons from their physical existence, ever witnessed him collapsing, wracked with sobs. But they both knew what had to be done, and so when Belladonna returned again with more exaltees, Jakam would be collected again, and nod solemnly to her, a thanks for guarding the secret of his despair.
