- - - Tarach and Akula began the Fletching clan together with both trepidation and enthusiasm. The two were both young dragons in a large world, and the clan stayed very small and tightly knit for several months. Tragically, however, before she had even lived a year, Akula passed on to the Windsinger in--what else--a windstorm. Her death rocked the Fletching clan so much that her mate went into a complete depression and would not allow any mirrors to even step near the lair. Two years passed this way.

- - - Then, after years of service to the Windsinger, Tarach's prayers were finally answered. Akula saw him from afar off as she landed lightly on the floor of the lair in a swirl that kicked up dust and leaves. She smiled as dozens of dragons she had never met gathered around her excitedly, wondering where she had come from and who she was. Her reunion with Tarach was a soothing balm to the entire clan. She views life with a much different perspective than many mirrors, having served under the Windsinger for such a long time, and she happily looks over hatchlings and adults, teaching and learning, and healing her mate's broken soul.

The old mirror cast an eye about the cavern she had been missing for two years. In her absence many of the decorations had gathered piles of dust, and her old possessions lay untouched in their alcove--except for her scarf. She smiled back at Tarach as the fae followed sheepishly behind her, the scarf much too big for him wrapped around his neck several times. Akula lowered herself to the glittering floor and nipped playfully at the ragged thing.

"It looks as though you haven't taken off that scarf since the day I lent it to you to keep you from freezing to death in the frosty winds."

Tarach stretched his wings and looked down.

"I haven't," he said simply. He had always had the subdued voice of a fae, but he sounded older, more tired, than she remembered him.

When they reached the lumps of fabric and feathers that served as a comfortable nest, Akula put a paw on her mate's back, gently nudging him over until he was lying on his side. Then, she curled up around him, nuzzling her snout against his sweet-smelling scales, and breathed a sigh of relief.

"It's been too long, dear one," she said, as the cavern drifted in and out of focus.

Tarach simply hummed, and for the first time in two and a half years, they both slept peacefully.
